Shotgun carts

I thought i knew a bit about shot guns, but i still need a little guidance.
I have a couple of 12 g shotguns and have never thought it would be a problem to buy cartridges of any general size of shot for birds,Fox’s and other small mammals.
Would there be a restriction on me to buy std carts, say a 10 g or others if i haven’t got the shotguns in that gauge on my Cert??

If you was traveling to a friends who was loaning his 10 bore to you for a goose flight then you would need to replace the ones you used!

the law permits a shotgun certificate holder to borrow a shotgun for up to 72 hours without the gun
being shown on his certificate,

So you will need something to stuff in the chamber....

You can buy whatever shotgun cartridges you like. In fact you don't even need an SGC to possess cartridges, although you can't buy them.

updated. i was ill informed, you can buy what ever shot gun cartridges you require,go enjoy!

Nonsense. An SGC is a licence to buy whatever shotguns you see fit, of any bore, in any sort of sensible quantity, and associated ammunition. There are no further significant limitations like there are for firearms.

you can only buy the cartridges stated on you sgc,ie if you dont have 10 bore you can not by the cartridges for that shot gun even if you borrowed one, some gun shops will sell them to you but in law you cant buy them.

If you borrow a shot gun for 72 hours, what are you going to fire out of it? Rice!

I must admit i was also thinking the same!
Thanks for your replies please keep them coming

In my experience I’ve never had the guns(bores) on my licence checked when buying cartridges and have bought 20 bore cartridges for the girlfriend without a 20 bore on my cert.

Whilst i appreciate your honest reply, i must urge you to please edit the last sentence sharpish!
In the current climate we have enough pressure to keep our house in order without giving the Antis more Ammo to bring us to our knees!

There isn't even a space on an SGC to record anything at all to do with ammunition, unlike on the FAC. This is not a real problem. That's why all they do in the shop is check that your licence is valid. That's all they need to do. Don't panic.

That’s a load of rubbish I’m afraid. You can buy anything you like.

I have bought .410" cartridges last year and haven't had a .410" on my SGC for maybe a decade plus. I buy them for a friend, a box when he has run out, and then give them to him, And, yes, I do check he still has a valid SGC when I hand them over to him. You can also buy standard, not slug, shot gun cartridges on an FAC if you have a s1 shot gun entered on it and no SGC. If you have an SGC you can buy any gauge of standard shot gun cartridge.

100% total Rubbish also you only need a SGC to Purchase NOT to hold

So what happens when you get a brand new shiny SGC want to stock up on some cartridges in your local as they have a really good deal but you haven't got hold of the shotgun yet?

If you had a .410 adaptor but owned a 12 bore gun you would be unable to buy cartridges. This is worthy of PW.
