Shotgun from Eu to uk

I am considering "buying"
a shotgun from the EU (a country where I can either add this to my shotgun licence there or directly on my uk shotgun certificate).

My question is to do with what is the process as I am finding it difficult to find out (local firearms officer unsure)...
My options are to fly it back with this registered onto my UK license only (plus cover note from gun dealer) or have it send to a UK gun dealer directly

Does anyone know the rules??
Thank you in advance

If your local RFD knows a RFD in the north of Ireland you could have it sent to northern Ireland first and then onto your local RFD.

I've twice in the past bought rifles abroad, signed them onto my certificate and brought them back without any bother. Notifying my Chief Constable of the purchases as soon as practicable on my return to the U.K.
So I would suggest that it's a fairly straightforward process.

P.S. I'm fairly sure that there's a form mentioned in the Firearms guidance to police document that should be completed on the permanent transfer of a firearm from one country to another.

Pre or post BREXIT? 😊

Pre Brexit, not that this should make any difference as IPP says that he has a shotgun license in both countries.
I at the time relied upon my EFP and permis de chasse to purchase in France and my U.K. FAC on my return.

Same here when I brought an unneeded 8 SXS back to the UK from Germany. And now I have found another 40x40cm box full of Remington green once fired plastic cases in my roof room in Germany, typical.

Thank you so much for the replies. I feel the best way forward is to add this on my uk certificate, notify Firearms officer in writing of the flight / date time in an email/ notify airline etc
Then , my understanding is that there will be a tax to pay at customs (import tax) no matter if this is a used or new shotgun...
Have I missed anything else?

European countries and the UK have firearm databases where gun ownership is recorded. If a gun is exported it needs to be removed from the database and marked as exported - no longer in the country. For this to happen an export licence has to be applied for and granted. For an export licence to be issued an import licence - in the case a UK import licence - needs to be provided.
Carriage, if you can find a courier that handles firearms, will be expensive.

I would look at personal possessions as regards export / import licenses and VAT.

You can probably bring it out under your EU licence, but you can possess a shotgun on your UK shotgun licence for a period of three days before doing a transfer.

But I would take proper advice as situations are changing and all the different EU countries have different policies/ procedures as regards non EU destinations and firearms laws.
