Shotgun Merge Debate

Parliamentary time is very limited, and there are many calls on debating time with all sorts of Bills being put forward for consideration.

The fact that in a preliminary discussion this issue has not garnered support will certainly be taken into account. The Government is not going to bring forward bills that are not going to gain full support as it is both a waste of time, but also doesnt look good in the optics of government.

There is a proposal to merge the SC and FAC all into one certificate and for this to reduce the administrative burden.

Some take the view that all guns will then be treated in the same way as rifles, ie individual authorisation of each gun with good reason for possession requirement, with variations required if you wish to add / change anything.

The preliminary debate in parliament - not in the main legislative chamber, yesterday was not supported by any of the MPs present, saying rather than improving anything, would dramatically increase the administrative burden on the Police for no additional benefit to public safety.

There will be a consultation - the current system does need reform.

You do realise that this was not a legislative process and apart from raising the profile of the issue, will have no bearing on any subsequent debate in the House?

That BASC headline is a little misleading.
especially as it looks like few of the MPs present were labour MPs

point being labour have a majority and they will do as the Chief Whip tells them.
Sooner Labour are removed from office the better, they have only ever attacked the rural community’s with a vengeance whenever they have had power. It’s all they ever do, tax the f out of you, tax the sh*t out of farmers or introduce unworkable legislation and then they always attack the shooting world
And for what ? What is this desperation to attack shooters ? Shooters are the most law abiding people

Frankly I think it’s well past time the shooting community and farmers showed the government the finger and protested there outrageous attitude to all things rural.

Nothing but ourselves to blame imo, we hide in the woodwork to not upset anyone but we still get politically motivated attacks that’s all this is. It does nothing to improve safety, does nothing to improve anything it’s just another barrier to ownership and restricts it more and for what ?

How many got killed by reckless drivers last year or by knives ? Bet it’s more than any lawful gun for the last 40 years

apparently far more killed by fireworks each year than the average over many years of 3.8 by legally owned firearms.

i was being facetious

make no mistake the governments end goal (particularly the left leaning commies) is to end civilian firearms ownership and the sooner we wake up and realise that the better !
And my biggest question I have for all of this regardless of party’s etc is why is there this desperation to take away firearms out of lawful hands when to own one you need to be and keep being lawful
It’s a fkn joke

Also that more people were killed with white goods and step ladders than with legal firearms.
Of those killed by legally held firearms a good percentage were on a domestic abuse watch list and the police were aware. So it was widely stated that it was a police and process failure and not a law issue.

it's easier for them rather than admit that it's their poor execution of the current rules that has lead to the issues we've seen , in many of the shooting incidents we see the perpetrator should not have had guns and only did due to a failure to enforce the current laws at the time

So when is the gun community going to take a stand against a constant erosion of its privilege
These organisations need to be fighting more

Wasn’t it the Conservative Government under John Major that brought the ban on Handguns in 1997, and in the 1980’s under Mrs T the ban on Semi auto rifles post Hungerford. In 2019, previous Government, also Conservative brought in the offensive weapons act which brought in lots of controls on carrying of knives?

yes i believe you are right , i think 22lr pistols were exempt but blair banned those as well when he got in as i think he got in at the change over

none of that changes that we need to get rid of this labour 'government' and certainly not for the tories , they've had their chance !

It was the Tories closed the railway station in my village under the Beeching Plan and the Tories, Thatcher, who privatised the buses so now we've one bus an hour where before Thatcher we had three and none on Sundays or bank holidays. So they may pose as such but they are just as tin eared to real rural needs as any other party when in office.
