Show Us Your Poppy

Particularly poignant in my part of the world - in 1987 at Enniskillen’s Remembrance Day Commemoration the ceremony was shattered by a terrorist bomb which killed 11 people. Fathers, mothers, children killed and some 67 injured, many with dreadful injuries.
Lest we forget.

Sat in a bar once, in Australia.

At last knockings; they played the National Anthem. Every ****er stood. Every single ****er.

Most moving night of my life.
My dear old dad always told the story about his brother Billy coming back from the war and of course taking him out for a celebratory drink to the local In working class Belfast. At closing time the National Anthem was played and everyone except my uncle stood up, much to dad’s embarrassment and to take the bad look off him, pop didn’t stand up either. Long story short - the two of them were then kicked up and down the length of the bar and as they staggered home by way of explanation my uncle said the king hadn’t done much for him so why should he stand up. So when they got home their father upon hearing this then kicked the two of them up and down the length of the yard, then in a pretty good parody of Charlie Chaplin my father kicked his brother up and down the yard! It was only at my dear old uncle’s funeral many years later that we learned that he had been injured in action three times in Europe and gone back each time. He suffered very badly “with his nerves” all the rest of his life, presumably from shell shock or the then unheard of PTSD.
A very brave man and one of great principle; a rare thing these days. Uncle Billy will be uppermost in my thoughts this Sunday.

This is one of my favourite songs - listen to the words. Apart from German Marching songs I often listen to this after too much gin and never fails to move me

With the greatest possible respect there is no finer version IMHO than that of the late Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners fame.

Aye it is good. But nice to hear an Aussie accent with this song especially

Folk club I was in many many moons ago in Hampshire this was always the last song. A guy did a solo with an old navy squeeze box. Did a fantastic job. He was good on the shanty’s too. Especially Bob Roberts songs like the candlelight fisherman

Well I wish I hadn’t posted my preferred version as it is making typing this a little difficult. But then any number of songs sung by June Tabor brings tears to my eyes.

Royal Munster Fusiliers, a front-line unit in the Boer war and many of WW1's worst battles. They were kind of written out of history in the Republic, but are finally being acknowledged and remembered.
I have heard of them, just unfamiliar with the capbadge. Very interesting. Thank you.

They were also one of the first regiments ashore at Gallipoli, suffered terrible losses.
