My dear old dad always told the story about his brother Billy coming back from the war and of course taking him out for a celebratory drink to the local In working class Belfast. At closing time the National Anthem was played and everyone except my uncle stood up, much to dad’s embarrassment and to take the bad look off him, pop didn’t stand up either. Long story short - the two of them were then kicked up and down the length of the bar and as they staggered home by way of explanation my uncle said the king hadn’t done much for him so why should he stand up. So when they got home their father upon hearing this then kicked the two of them up and down the length of the yard, then in a pretty good parody of Charlie Chaplin my father kicked his brother up and down the yard! It was only at my dear old uncle’s funeral many years later that we learned that he had been injured in action three times in Europe and gone back each time. He suffered very badly “with his nerves” all the rest of his life, presumably from shell shock or the then unheard of PTSD.Sat in a bar once, in Australia.
At last knockings; they played the National Anthem. Every ****er stood. Every single ****er.
Most moving night of my life.

What Cap badge is that Daman?
Royal Munster Fusiliers, a front-line unit in the Boer war and many of WW1's worst battles. They were kind of written out of history in the Republic, but are finally being acknowledged and remembered. What Cap badge is that Daman?
