Silver labrador

I know a lad who paid a lot of money last year for a "silver lab" its as daft as a brush, just like most young labs.

All.
Does anyone on here own a silver Labrador??
I’m not looking for peoples opinions of whether a Weimaraner is crossed in, or the colour gene carried. Simply peoples options and real life experiences of the dogs. I have read considerably around the skin conditions and looking for other owners experiences.
Cheers
Never seen a silver lab. However, they'll be an absolute disaster area if they follow the chocolate curve. When chocolates popped up, they were a genetic oddity of coat colour and were pretty well normal labs. Now chocolates seem to be bred for chocolates, I'd advise any prospective owner to avoid them. Skin problems mostly, but they seem to be more unruly, although this is probably becuase folk buoying for colour have no idea on how to train dogs. I can see silver being the same.

I can't think of a single breed that is bred for looks that has come to any good.

In my experience and opinion they are a Labrador/Weimaraner cross.
Normally have a light eye colour and large frame.
Most originated in North America along with Pointing Labradors, Chocolate labs etc.
Depending on your requirements and expectations they may be what you want, l personally wouldn’t give one kennel room.
If you want a lab for work stick to black yellow and fox red (these however can have some vizla in).
Not apposed to out crosses but for the right reason, appearance not being one of them.
Some of the best working labs I have known have had white on the chest and or bottom of feet.

The simple reason you do not want a Silver labrador is to do with shooting on driven days.

When your black lab runs in or busts a load of pheasants you can safely scream ā€˜ whose is that bloody Labrador ā€˜ and no one will know if it is yours or any of the other 20 present on that shoot day. If , on the other hand you have a Silver lab……

Labrador pedigrees.I was with my mate a head keeper and a lady came up to us and introduced her self. ā€œHello your dog is the father of this oneā€ she said very proudly.ā€How old is it ā€œsaid my mate ā€œ11 months ā€œ came the reply .Pleasantries were exchanged and off she went.He looked at me and said ā€œit’s a miracle the old lad died 2 years agoā€. The breeder had used his dogs kennel club number again after he mated the breeders bitch 4 years earlier. She breeds fox red Labradors,Doberman’s working Cocker spaniels and Bedlington x whippets.Pedigrees aren’t all there cracked up to be.

26 posts and Doesn’t look like anybody has one.
neither do I. In fact I’m not allowed one. I have a similar fat grey haired animal. But I’m not brave enough to tell her.
Bet you still love her tho when she’s making your pack lunch for a stalk at 5 in the morning šŸ‘šŸ˜‡šŸ˜‚

Black labs are essential items for keepers, I followed that rule for years, served me well!!!!

Following a similar logic, I'd recommend calling your dog "Woodcock". Then when your dog runs in on one of your posh driven days, and you shout his/her name, all the guns will start looking for the woodcock to shoot and (hopefully) ignore the fact that your dog has run in.

Reminds me of the remark made by an old well respected dog trainer.
Guide Dogs For The Blind mostly use yellow labs, because they don’t have as much drive as the black ones.

So a year down the line with the silver lab and couldn’t be happier she took a couple of trips ducking end of season and I was super impressed with her retrieving in water over considerable distances. She is quiet enough to peg dog all day and will work well, she’s no cocker work ethic but neither has any lab iv ever owned, but that’s horses and courses. She is now 3 weeks into training on the deer and has just completed her first 200m track at 2 hrs old, not by design someone called in the yard just after I’d laid it, she didt seem at all perturbed that the chickens had dug away at the trail as the liver had been over it and nailed it without any back passes. Overall iv found her easier to train that my fox reds and on par with my blacks, athletic wise she is a lot more nimble than my others and can out swim them hands down. As iv only ever had one silver it’s no real science but so far she out does my ā€œpure breedā€ labs in just about all ways. Designer dog or not the Weimaraner in her is obvious and to be honest I think it brings out all the positives and I still can’t see any negatives. I know there not for everyone but I’d take another in a heartbeat, will be interesting to see how they develop and if I just have an easy one.

You say the Weimarana in her, do you know if her line had that in it or was it a genetic glitch (which does occur occasionally) as opposed to intentional introduction of another breed?
Any dog can be trained (or not!!) so good on you for doing what you’ve done, good for them to have a purpose. Wish all mine did!!

She’s KC reg pure lab but by genetic code she can only get her silver gene from Weimaraner (there are other crosses that can, but most prob weim) all the silvers go back to American imports that came from Kellogg kennels who happened to also breed Weimaraners. She very occasionally points and has some very distinctive weimaraner physical traits. If she was black I’d definitely believe someone who told me she was pure lab just an athletic line of the breed.
