Err let me think about this..................................................No.should the site pay the top contributing members like YouTube does?
Imagine if all 32,000 members became supporters what would Malc and Co do with the money?
Well we all know that's not going to happen. But perhaps people may like to pay us for the hours we spend moderating this site. It has cost us time and money over some 15 years to put this site on the world map. At least we bothered to save it from being dumped, which no doubt would have happened if we had not purchased it.Imagine if all 32,000 members became supporters what would Malc and Co do with the money?
Oooh will start me dreamingIndeed £762k Thats a lot of courses

No Lee, it is not a public forum. Its a private forum, privately owned by 3 individuals, who purchased it and put time and money into it over some years. It is available for anyone to view, but not comment or join unless they pass the introduction and are allowed to join. What you have to remember is gents is, those who are supporting members want to be, and those who are not, don’t want to be and are not!
I am a trade member because I have stuff to sell, once that’s done, I will withdraw my trade membership until such a time I need it again, I once was a supporter member, but I will not be again and that is my decision and mine alone, and nothing will change my mind
What we have to remember is, this is a public forum regardless who owns it (no offence intended) compared to 10 years ago the wealth of knowledge is average compared to what it was, some no longer want to be members and have gone to FB others have sadly passed and some just don’t want to be active members anymore.
P6Perhaps only supporters could place ads.
Outstanding post of the year.P6
Ken.
And it’s not a copy/duplicateOutstanding post of the year.
Privately owned but publically accessable.
It makes no odds to me but if you made it restricted to only members selling then I wager there would be a massive reduction in number of adds. This would impact on many who use SD as a first port of call to buy things secondhand. Especially when starting out.
On top of this, if this is the direction of travel then all of the supporters ought to be given exact figures of finances of the site. This ought to be annually as in other societies as effectively they are becoming share holders. This is a ball ache for the site owners and not a good idea.
I have little doubt that running this site is not a small thing. Hosting this site does cost but when added together the trade membership fees, the advertising revenue and sponsorship deals from major players I would be surprised if all the costs of hosting the site are not covered and as such the chances of it going under small.
It’s one of those things that you need to be careful what you wish for and maybe don’t try and fix something that’s not broken.
If people feel that SD is a worthwhile cause they want to support then let them do it, but don’t force people too would be my mantra. As I’ve posted before I have an annual sum of charity money I spend and each year I decide who it will go to. I like having the option to choose.

The issue would be that being asked to support a site because it is at risk of going under would really necessitate seeing the accounts. All tied up with donations and money laundering. As said a ball ache for the owners.Agree with much of that but don’t understand how you arrive at the second paragraph
