SITE MEMBERSHIP

Joking aside - there’s a lot of tweaking and moderating goes on behind the scenes to keep us all in touch and sell the odd bits that must take a lot of time to keep up
50p a week isn’t a bad price at all for all that

So being a paid supporter to advertise is really good value and helps the SD sponsor L1 courses in fact giving back to the members

Support to advertise as a basic contribution would be a real help to the SD all round this deserves thinking about 👍

Just my thoughts on it

What you have to remember is gents is, those who are supporting members want to be, and those who are not, don’t want to be and are not!

I am a trade member because I have stuff to sell, once that’s done, I will withdraw my trade membership until such a time I need it again, I once was a supporter member, but I will not be again and that is my decision and mine alone, and nothing will change my mind

What we have to remember is, this is a public forum regardless who owns it (no offence intended) compared to 10 years ago the wealth of knowledge is average compared to what it was, some no longer want to be members and have gone to FB others have sadly passed and some just don’t want to be active members anymore.

Imagine if all 32,000 members became supporters what would Malc and Co do with the money?
Well we all know that's not going to happen. But perhaps people may like to pay us for the hours we spend moderating this site. It has cost us time and money over some 15 years to put this site on the world map. At least we bothered to save it from being dumped, which no doubt would have happened if we had not purchased it.

But if everyone does take up a supporters role, I will still be able to use my laptop from my private island in the Caribbean.

All that training would sort the deer deluge we have with ease, could even start up as a game dealer to process all the finely shot deer 👍. That’s it all sorted 🤣🤣🤣

Indeed £762k Thats a lot of courses

Could start up an SD college with a few full time trainers

Oooh will start me dreaming

No Lee, it is not a public forum. Its a private forum, privately owned by 3 individuals, who purchased it and put time and money into it over some years. It is available for anyone to view, but not comment or join unless they pass the introduction and are allowed to join.
We make the rules and manage the site, so it's not publicly owned.

But I get what you are getting at. Funny how some leave, and then try and come back though, even using a different log in name

It makes no odds to me but if you made it restricted to only members selling then I wager there would be a massive reduction in number of adds. This would impact on many who use SD as a first port of call to buy things secondhand. Especially when starting out.

On top of this, if this is the direction of travel then all of the supporters ought to be given exact figures of finances of the site. This ought to be annually as in other societies as effectively they are becoming share holders. This is a ball ache for the site owners and not a good idea.

I have little doubt that running this site is not a small thing. Hosting this site does cost but when added together the trade membership fees, the advertising revenue and sponsorship deals from major players I would be surprised if all the costs of hosting the site are not covered and as such the chances of it going under small.

It’s one of those things that you need to be careful what you wish for and maybe don’t try and fix something that’s not broken.

If people feel that SD is a worthwhile cause they want to support then let them do it, but don’t force people too would be my mantra. As I’ve posted before I have an annual sum of charity money I spend and each year I decide who it will go to. I like having the option to choose.

Agree with much of that but don’t understand how you arrive at the second paragraph

The issue would be that being asked to support a site because it is at risk of going under would really necessitate seeing the accounts. All tied up with donations and money laundering. As said a ball ache for the owners.

BG is correct in most of his initial post but I disagree with him when he refers to ‘ charity money’ in no way can SD be seen as a charity, it’s run as a business pure and simple with the supporters draw being exactly that, a sweepstake for supporters to enter as per the national lottery... you pays your money or not but £24 per annum is a piffling amount ffs when you consider the yearly road fund licence (joke) on a Landy is £345.

Let me make this clear.
We are NOT proposing to charge for the use of the classified section for members of this site, at this point in time. Nor are there any plans in the future.

BUT, we have had a number of people over the years, trading and using classifieds to promote, offer goods for sale either as full time retailers or running a small business. You would be surprised how many seem to have a surplus of items for sale, that are all the same, and put up posts as the last few I have left, or I might be getting some more in the near future . This is not fair on those that have paid and taken out Trade membership. Which I might add is only £10 per month.

No one on here makes ANYONE become a Supporter. Its up to the individual to make their decision. And as I have already mentioned its taken a lot of work, time and our money to put this site where it is now. Time and money I am sure many of those that complain and always seem to put the owners and site down at times would never have spent or even considered?
