Small game hygiene course?

I thought if u had large game u didnae need the small game as it covered both.
Like u say it's only really handling the game in a proper way and making sure u idetified and recognised every bird ;) was fit and healthy afore it was shot and put in game cart.

I take it it is compulsory to have it if selling birds to game dealers? If so ur game dealer might be able to advise, also if ur only selling hawked rabbits i'm sure the individual game dealer would give u an answer if he wants them and wot price he will pay (possibly same as shotgunned?)
I wouldn't have thought u'd get very big bags off rabbits while hawking to make it worth ur while taking them to a dealer

I seen last part answered about all shoots needing someone with small game ticket, i know a few shoots that sell game and they only have there large game certs

No your large game handling does not cover birds, its is needed for selling birds to a gamedealer yes, there are exemptions if you have some other qualification for example a vet would be exempt.

Yes I also know of shoots that are selling their birds without having a ticket, but they are in breach of the regulations, only know of one thats been caught they were not prosecuted but given a severe warning.

Bogtrotter, my suggestion of the website was to show who run the courses, perhaps those wishing to do the small version only, could contact the organisations near to them and see if they will run a course or not. regards Roehunter

My EHO said that as i was a trained hunter he said in addition to the venison i could sell rabbits if i decided to go down that road, i just needed to provide another HACCAP plan.

Cheers Richard - twas only bunnies that was what I was after really. Assumed that would need to be covered by 'small game'.

Have not heard back from BASC regards a suitable course in my area, but will post here if I do.

With the large game hygiene certification included in my DSC1, just wondered if it is possible to do a small game one as an add-on. Can't seem to find a straightforward answer on the net.
Looks like you can do a one day course that covers both, but I've already done one part. Any ideas if it's possible and if so who to contact?
Thanks
This sounds awfully familiar as I recall similar post DSC1 course dialogue with LANTRA that to this day remains unresolved:

Q1: I recently qualified as a so-called “Trained Hunter” c/o a BDS-run DSC1 Course. However, the Game and Hygiene modules do not cover “small” game which I will need to process rabbit and feathered game. Can I simply sit a Small Game test or do I have to take a full LANTRA “Level 2 Award in Wild Game Meat Hygiene (QCF) including endorsements in large game and small game” to achieve this qualification??

A: Yes you can cover both with our course. I have attached our centre list.

Q2: Thanks but the point was/is that I don’t want to re-sit the element I’ve already secured c/o the BDS but simply add “Small Game”. I also note that the BDS are listed as a “centre” for this but I’ve never seen a reference to either “Small Game” or “Wild Game Meat Award Level 2” on their training website but then I’m not the sharpest plastic handled knife in the sterilizer!

And that’s where the correspondence ended.

Any suggestion please?

Cheers

K

For those that live near Wimborne, Dorset....
Jan Andrews will run the small game hygene course / assessment.
If I remember correctly she requires a minimum of six to attend. She usually tags the half day course following a DSC1
The price for 2012 was £45....bargain.

Still waiting to do mine due to a lack of attendees!!.....google her web site - Roebuck Deer management services & contact her...then I can do mine!!, or pm me your details & I will speak with her!

Thanks NBF,

Could well be interested in that if it's as you say a sort of 'add-on'. Had a call from a lady at BASC , who said it is possible to sit the small game paper only at a cost of £45. However, that doesn't come with any manual/texts beforehand. The cost of the one-day large & small course (with all paperwork included) is £120.

Quite why it couldn't simply have be included (as an option if necessary) in the three day DSC1 course I took was and is still beyond me.

Most deerstalkers also shoot and process rabbits.

Jimbo

done both at................ Sparsholt College,

great time was had and met a few new lads to boot.

bob.

Is this still an issue or has anybody sorted out a sensible add on for small game after you get large

Seems stupid in the extreme to not make an upgrade course easily available or to simply do the full LANTRA course on the DSC 1 its only 1module extra as you already cover the common module and large game module probably only a few extra questions .

I did my game meat handling with basc and it doesnt just cover you for pheasants and rabbits but all game partrdge grouse squirrels hares ducks etc
Most game dealers will take rabbits no questions but you should have your small game ticket as it is a different set of rules, handling and storage temperatures to deer
Friend of mine just started out did his with ngo a couple of weeks ago and said he enjoyed the day and lernt lot although a lot of it is just common sence

I did mine with NGO too. Trainer was excellent. But, I agree, there's a fair amount of common sense. I can now sign off all game up to wild boar.

The NGO held the course on the Englefield Estate and the keeper produced a freshly shot roe so that the trainer could demonstrate a gralloch.

Got this back from BASC today so LANTRA said DMQ cannot add the Small game module

and looks to be the answer is to Pay to do the whole course and repeat the 2 parts already done which is daft not to mention Expensive

Dear Mr Chandler

Thank you for your email. We do not currently run the small game meat hygiene course due to the costs involved but you can look on the Lantra website. We have already investigated adding the small game module onto our DSC1 course but the Food Standards Agency prevented this from being allowed due to the awarding body (Deer Management Qualification) only dealing with large game.

I have spoken with our Best Practice and Training Officer and he will look further into perhaps developing this course in the future. If this does happen then we will certainly contact you.

Kindest regards
