Not specifically a deer dog question, but does anyone ha e any special tips to make removing grass seeds brambles etc from spaniels ears a bit kinder on them.

Another season about to start and im now running two cockers whos ears end up with grass seeds bramble and matted together after a day in the field. Wondered if anyone uses any products to make these a bit easier to get out?

One of the beaters on our shoot has a clever comb device which incorporates a razor blade or Stanley knife blade which seems to work well. Another one uses some waxy/oily thing horsey people put on manes and tails bit like Brylcreme which seems to prevent many tangles.

Me I just spend a happy half hour pulling all the sweethearts and burrs off and dethorning her when we get home. Good bonding exercise grooming!

The worst is that black grass stuff.

I use a battery clipper on mine, also do in-between their toes. I don't pick up any more with mine as they get enough with pigeons and ducks also smashing them around for guns who never seem to care is not for me. Better for the dogs better for me.

Agreed its a very good bonding exercise and in definately not looking for something to replace grooming. Just something that might make it a little kinder on them.

👍Mane n Tail spray before you go out, that certainly reduces the number of burrs that adhere, then another spray before you settle down to groom at the end of the day - the lube makes the brushing out much easier and painless and won’t need washing out afterwards.

You just have to remember to spray before you go out… 🙄 😣

The obvious point when doing it by hand is to hold the bur or tangle and pull the hair away from it and towards the animal, rather than just pulling the tangle away from the dog....

I will ask my friend which one of the comb devices she has found the best...
