agree. when i divide the cost of my jacket and trousers by the number of years i have had out of them, they become cheap.
I have a pair of Custom Tricker country brogue boots I bought from The Shoe Healer 4 years ago... They are worn probably 5 out of 7 days of the week (all day) and have been since I bought them, they have been rebuilt and re-soled once with a commando sole at a cost of £90. I paid £320 for them... They should have been over £600.
When I tell people this they baulk and gasp that a pair of shoes cant be worth that much money and that I have more money than sense and have been conned!!! hmmm lets see... Over the past 4 years I have also bought 3 pairs of 'premium brand' high street black shoes for client meetings, sales meetings... basically for when I'm forced to wear a suit! probably 2 out of 7 days a week. these run at about £70 a pop... all three pairs are wrecked.. the soles have come off one pair with no way of repairing them as they are moulded, the other 2, the uppers have lost all shape and form and are no longer fit for purpose..
So.... 3 x £70 = £210 failed over 4 years = worn 416 days total and so a cost of approx. 50p per day. My Trickers have been worn 1,040 days at a total cost of £410 and still going very, very strong at a cost of approx. 39p per day...
So.... which is the better value?
The term 'you get what you pay for' isn't something someone down the pub made up... Harkila is damned good quality, for the most part, bomb proof kit and will be gracing someone's back (probably the 2nd, 3rd, 4th owner!) many, many years after 'better value!!!' gear will have been resigned to the bin!
