Stalking jacket - plain or camo?

RWC2010,
Do you mind telling me how you would compare the two, given that you use them for different things? Is the fact the Ranger jacket is your nightime jacket mean it is heavier/warmer than the smock, which is maybe more suited to stalking? My fear with the smock was overheating but maybe I'm worrying about nothing. I normally wear a merino wool base layer and am happy with the layering concept from experience hill walking and fishing so with that in mind maybe the smock is the way to go... In which case I just have to decide between the Rivers West and the Ridgeline...:???:

Its down to pockets and what i'll be carrying really. they are the same weight in fabric 'LAW mid weight'. If you need further info give the guys at rivers west a call, when I was pondering which way to go I rang them 01524 548060 very helpful they were too.

I think Camo is just a macho cultural thing, I just don't buy the theory that this particular patter provides the greatest camouflage against everything... generalisations are always wrong.

As you mentioned smocks above

There are other alternatives to the two you mentoned, the Country Covers field smock which I use and rate highly.

I see Deerhunter have also added a smock to their range now, can't comment on this as I haven't seen one yet but yet more to throw into the mix!

You know rigboot, I was going to mention Country Covers earlier but didn't bother as folk tend to make their mind up about a product and just go for it.

For what it's worth, I bought the smock/parka last week after looking at some of their products that guests were wearing this year when out stalking with me. Those wearing the product were actually keepers and abuse the garments daily. All had nothing but praise for them.

The products are made in Britain and are supplied to numerous American Special Forces units and the Falklands Police among others as can be read on their website. That is a good enough advert for me.

The really bit bit though, is I paid £200 for mine as I haggled a wee bit as other stuff was bought as well, but the guarantee they offer I don't think can be bettered. Regardless of how it is damaged, even tearing on barbed wire or thorns, in other words your fault, they will repair or replace for up to 4 years!!!

I handled their stuff at the gamefair and IMO there is nothing to touch it for the money. Especially when you think that any product bough here with made in China on it will have cost in reality probably less than £20 to manufacture.

IMHO, camo has its place, but not necessary to hunt effectively. I used to wear when I bow hunted, but at rifle ranges I hunted with both plain, muted colors and camo and couldn't really see that it made a difference. Camo here in the US has become more of a friggin fashion statement than anything else (along with lining someone's pockets due to the extra charge of a "more effective camo pattern).

Now I tend to wear just muted colors.

BTW, I just got this jacket this past fall and it has worked wonderfully...all the pockets in the right place, light weight and fairly quiet.

I'm currently wearing the Deerhunter 'muddy' brown stuff - seems pretty good at this time of year.

Tend to wear Timber Ghost, bought from Cabelas years ago, when it gets a bit warmer but it's a bit grey for highseat work round here at the moment. Could do with a bit of tree trunk green in it - might have to get the spray can out.

Have also got an Deerhunter big coat (ie Pre-Montana) in RT extra brown and a couple of Bowhunter fleeces, one in a lighter extra brown and the other is a true fleece with more grey in it - depends on where I intend to sit/stalk.

Wearing a veil and gloves is probably the most important I find... and if I wear my glasses with the reactolite lenses I get bumped really quickly if they're darkened.

Found the new DH smock on fleabay:

Its more about movement than colour - when you consider some deer are red with white spots it makes you think eh?

Tried it all, cammo, green, brown, tweed, jeans ! Movement, wind direction and use of ground are what matter most.
Buy whatever you feel comfortable with or like the look of. It would be boring if we all wore the same uniform !

Green for me also - mainly for the reason it looks a bit less aggressive than camo if you come across other people.

Plus you can jump in the car with it all on and get out at the cafe or pertrol station without turning heads.

Fbw I have the new deer hunter smock here if you want to see or try it.

Cheers Pierre...... but just got too many coats and jackets. Boxes full of the stuff.

Lol! It must be a man thing, one can only have so many, bought another musto last week, at least I've haven't got many pairs of shoes... plenty of pairs of boots though!
