Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Stutzen 6.5×57

Hi everyone,

some of you might remember my questions about Steyr Stutzens a few months ago. I'm left handed so I was looking for something in that direction. Originally I wanted Steyr Model M but someone suggested Luxus instead. Might have been a very good advice as the all steel Luxus does have that solid feel to it. So long story short, I managed to find this used vintage Steyr Luxus in 6.5×57 with left handed stock. My prefered cal would be 6.5×55 which I allready own but this one will be nice too. It has that germanic flavour to it that will go nicely with the rifle itself. The rifle looks, feels and handles lovely, it's short and compact. The riflescope is Kahles Helia S 6×42 with Steyr's original detachable mounts. It came to me without magazine so I bought two off egun. Unfortunately they do not fit. Must have got the wrong ones. I wonder how the right ones look.

Thanks for looking.

Those magazines look like they’re from a later model, the one you’re after is straight walled and holds 4 rounds ( if my memory is correct, it might be 3).
6.5x57 is a cracking round, a fair step up from the Swede but not common.
Best of luck with the rifle.
Does it have a set trigger?

Straight walled and holds 4 rounds. Hm, not sure if I ever even saw that one on a pic. Can anyone please provide a pic so I'll know what to look for?
I allready contacted Steyr but have not yet received the info I'm looking for.
The trigger is the french set trigger type and breaks very cleanly.
I allready contacted the gentelman from Germany who makes custom magazines and he replyed he is familiar with the magazine type I'm looking for and he could provide one for me as he has allready done a few of them. The price however is 325 € plus dhl shipping. So I'm planning to use this option as a last resort.
Is it this one?

The max CIP pressure for your 6.5 x 57 is 56,560 psi, so any factory load shouldn't be a problem (as long as no-one has altered your rifle since it was CIP proofed).

That magazine looks right but I’m not certain. You need to get one the correct length and cartridge family too. It might be worth making enquiries over here, there were a few around in 5.6x57, there may be a spare mag knocking about, there’s not much market for rifles in that caliber now.

I hope you didn’t pay too much for a vintage rifle missing it’s magazine.
You might trawl the auction sites looking for a rough old donor rifle that you could strip for parts.
Check holts sealed bid listings.

Well, I thought finding a mag would be easy as they are all over the egun and similar german and austrian sites. It turned out to be not so easy... Didn't saw that one coming. Right now I don't even know what type of mag I'm looking for.

No it's not rotary. It's steel single stack magazine but slightly different than those that I got. I will ask my gunsmith if he can fit me the mags I allready have.

There was a plastic 5 cartridge rotary mag on the ordinary models, the Luxus is all steel and has a roller type safety on top of the tang.
Really nice rifles, I always hankered after one.
As did I but in truth never noticed/appreciated that subtle difference. I have a 1970’s catoluge somewhere that I only kept as it shows all models of the period and the varying action lengths.

I’ll try and dig it out and post pictures.

Yes please, there might be some pics of the magazine itself somewhere in there. I know that Frankonia catalogues from the 80's also included pics of the Steyr magazines.

There seem to have been two generations of the Luxus model. The early one (the one which you have) with the safety lever on the right side of the action and a later one with a knurl safety in the tang:

If you look closely you will also notice that the magazine release buttons on the newer model are different to yours.

Taking one of your pics it becomes clear that the mags you bought cannot possibly fit as the bottom plate extends to the rear which will collide with the trigger guard. So this bit will be an indication in your search for the right magazine.

You are absolutely correct. It jams on the trigger guard. However, if that protruded part of the magazine is the only cause of the jam, would it not be possible to adjust the mag by a gunsmith?

I guess that would be case of trail and error.
Another thing that irritates me is that I have found pictures of the old Luxus model which still differ from your pics. Can you see this little latch in front of the trigger guard? Yours doesn't seem to have this.

The photo shows a Luxus M. Could it be that you have a Luxus L? This will probably also make a difference.

It is not stated on the rifle itself but according to catalogs from the time it appears the 6.5×57 falls into Luxus M category.
It would appear my rifle is a very early model with so far unknown type of magazine. The magazine in the catalog is clearly the same as mine.
