Storing rifle in UK ?

Does anyone know if it is possible to leave a rifle with a RFD or gunclub in UK so I can use it when I return to UK for hunting trips. It is a pain to bring a rifle backwards and forwards from Europe - only really practical if I drive and take the Chunnel

Just write to a RFD company near where you will be going and ask them.
How would you explain where your "gun" is if you were asked by your local authority where it is?

Most Firearms dealers will store guns for you, for a fee.

Alternatively, you could get them put onto a friend’s certificate and they can hold them for you.

For you to use your own firearm in the UK you would need to have a visitors firearm certificate to cover the period you will be here. You may be able to find an RFD who will hold the firearm for you but you will still need the visitors FAC each time. You may be able to persuade the issuing force to grant you one for a longer period of time, assuming you are using it in the same place each time & not going to different parts of the country, if you can get a sponsor to write explaining for example that you are a regular visitor or syndicate member. Perhaps speak to the firearms dept that issues your visitor FAC & ask their advice.

If you have some spare cash you could pay someone to adopt your rifle and put it onto their ticket. Then they accompany you, to allow you to use ‘their’ rifle under supervision. There are a few legal aspects that need to be sorted between your supervisor and the estate but that isn’t hard to do. Then it would simply be a day rate to hire the supervisor whilst you are stalking as driver and rifle owner. They would have to accompany you but that isn’t complex. It would probably be cheaper than car hire and firearms transfer fees. I would be happy to do it, subject to legal advice and contracts for both parties.

It is perfectly doable and indeed many do so.

Some estates and shoot owners / organisers/ guides do have their own RFD for this very reason and will safe and secure storage for many of their guests.

Cornerstone of many gunshops business is storing guns for their clients.

And perfectly doable to get a friend to get a rifle / shotgun and put them on his own ticket.

As to using the guns in terms of licence.

Simplest is to use them in the presence of a certificate holder. Gets a bit complicated though.

Shotgun Certificate holder can use any shotgun, indeed can borrow one for a period of three days without notifying the Police. Can hold as many as his security allows. Makes it easy enough for a SC holder to accompany a visitor to a shoot and visitor to use the gun in his presence. Often at the bigger shoots with overseas visitors “loaders” are there for this very reason.

Firearms Certificates- are much more restricted in that a certificate holder can only use the rifles on his ticket. And rifles - it serial number that is critical. A non certificate holder can use the rifle under the the close supervision of the certificate holder, provided the certificate holder has the lawful authority to use the rifle on the land in question.

Overseas visitors can also get a visitors Firearms Permit. This needs to be sponsored by a UK certificate holder. This does allow you to acquire and use a firearm in the UK. So when applying you put down the details of the rifle that the visitor will be borrowing, and the visitor can then use / transport it etc.

Where do you normally keep it when you are in UK ?
I kept one of mine at my home address, the address on my FC, when I was posted to Germany so that I could use it whenever I returned on leave.
I didn't see anything wrong with that, the gun cupboard was quite secure and I had the keys so I never gave it any thought.
