Here is the 12.36 Synoptic Chart. This a deep low spirraling around and moving fast. In the middle it will be absolutely calm, but high winds not far away. Look how close the isobars are over central and southern Scotland.

Nothing as exhilarating as doing the morning milking whilst the sheds are deconstructing around you, brings back memories of Boxing day '98
 
Rain containing some filth picked up on it's travels has completely obscured the windows on the South side of our place, just like a greenhouse with painted out windows, back lawns are covered in a fine coat of pine needles from the big trees, I have recovered a Teckel from his excavations at the base of one of those trees, :lol:power is still on, 🤫🤞...........A better direction of gusts than the last storm we had, waiting on the promised tail sting through the next few hours.:scared:

You probably could walk down the steps, but where are you going?
Technically you are “ airside” . To go into the terminal you need to be shepherded through immigration who may not be expecting or in a position to process you, first hurdle. Then when you’ve had your piddle, free tea and sarny you need to be issued a new boarding pass and go back through security again, second hurdle. You may even have to identify your baggage at the aircraft steps before you get back on. Third hurdle, while you do all this your flight crew are running out of hours, they may not be able to fly you to your destination.
You’ll notice that not once have I mentioned the weather, which actually started the whole sorry cascade.

This is what I mean. I know there are serious issues being caused all over Ireland (something like 980000 houses without power?) & poor ol' @flatliner and many others with serious damage. But for so many services to be closed, and for so much fuss made over the Amber warnings that we currently have across Angus smacks to me of timidity and little else. Sure it's a bit windy here just now, and we have horizontal rain, but it's hardly Biblical. In fact, it's almost as though it were Winter.

The thing is - it didn’t relate to immigration - they communicated it was the stairs that was the issue.

The stairs took the blame, but trust me, there was a lot more to it than that.
There always is.
An airport is one of the most strictly regulated areas on the planet. Regulated by different agencies with different regulations and agendas, mostly backed up by laws, regulations and serious penalties for breaches.
At its best it is a formal gavotte of great complexity and a thing of beauty on those 2 half hours a year when it runs the way it should.
At its worst it can be the deepest circle of hell where common sense is always subservient to the regulations with big penalties for non compliance.
If there was a simple, cheap, fast solution, it would have happened.
look at all the steps you go through when you get off an airplane, now look at all the steps to get onto one. That was the problem.

Almost every major road closed in south and central Scotland, every minor road closed at some point, trees down ans structural damage left right and centre.

Not just another windy day.

Absolutely. Good call from the authorities to ensure emergency resources can cope with the damage.
