Stutzen Rifles

That's because, like many many other modern standards, they are so very very wrong....!
Well I arrived at cranky old guy sooner than anticipated the newest rifle or shotgun I own anylonger is the Remington 700 5R that I think was made between 2005 and 2010 while most everything else I have is 50+ years old . I think the newest shotgun I own anylonger is 110 years old . Did a tower shoot two weekends ago and carried two SxS’s one was 135 years old and the other was 143 years old . Old doesn’t mean it won’t get the job done or serve the purpose .

View attachment 456053Love my Stutzen! It’s a 1992 Steyr Mannlicher Luxus in .243 with a single set trigger. Handles wonderfully but bugger is it loud!
Do you reload? Because my 7x57 stutzen (52 cm/20.5 inch barrel) also sounds like an absolute cannon when shooting factory loads. It spews fire too:lol: But i reckon a good bit of that is to do with the factory ammo not being intended for performance in shorter barrels, resulting in a good bit of unburnt powder and a big muzzle blast and flash.
When i finish with my old stash of lead ammo, and go fully to hand loaded non leads i am hoping quite strongly to see some improvements on this, i have to say.:D

I’ve Wanted a 6.5x57 for quite a few years . Mannlicher Schoenauer made some but I’ve only seen the half stock ones I’d say from the 20’s or 30’s . One in the MS MC or MCA stutzen configuration would be awesome .
One of my fav cartridges to use. I have a mauser 98 build in it, but i dont believe i have ever seen a MS. I shall let you know if i see one. :)

ps. i strongly suspect that you already know this, but brass born as 6.5x57 isnt the easiets to come by these days. Luckily ppu makes cheap sp ammo for it, so one can simply use those for training and then reload the brass from there. :)

I don’t actually, and have only used 100gr factory ammo so that probably doesn’t help!

Nope, and i am in the same boat, having used primarily heavy (for caliber) factory loaded ammo in my stutzen too. If i see significant improvement on flash and blast once i transition to reloaded non leads, using faster powders than what is probably in the factory ones, i'll post in here, as quite a few of us stutzen users are probably experiencing the same thing, and would like to fix it, if possible💥 😄

When I bought my first 6.5x54 MS what I call good brass was hard to come by so as an “until something better comes along” I bought some ammo from S&B and I think PPU . Factory ammo shot alright and the brass was good for the first reload but after that it was if the primer pockets kept getting deeper . So the 60 or so pieces of that I had went in the garbage and I use Norma exclusively for the 6.5x54MS . Up until that occurred I thought if I ever found a 6.5x57 or even a 6.5x57R that S&B or PPU brass would be fine . But anymore I’m not so sure .

Hm, that sounds like quite an unfortunate experience with the ppu brass indeed. How long ago was This, if I may ask?
I think that maybe RWS also makes brass for the 6.5x57, but if you prefer to work with Lapua or Norma quality brass, then reworking 7x57 norma cases might be necessary, I think. 🤔

I have some RWS original factory ammo, but I haven't fired it. I bought Norma brass & use it all the time... it's good brass.
I always re-size to fired headspace dimensions & don't have any issues with my reloads. SAAMI/CIP resizing usually always reduces brass life, often significantly.
These old rifles if resizing to SAAMI/CIP usually have a very short lifespan & incipient case head splits occur.

Last five years I’d say . I’ve got a 7x57 already and plenty 7x57 brass also a good bit of orphaned 6mm REM and 257 Roberts . If I ever got one I think I’d try one of each first to see which was easier . I’ve got an edition of Ken Waters “Pet Loads” and he kinda goes in depth about making brass for the 6.5x57 .

Well you're all set then, it sounds like. I hope you do find it! 🎯🙂
