Stutzen Rifles

Here are some old SAKO mounts on a non-Stützen AII. S&B query...
Not sure about 30mm, but the ones in my pics are 26mm low , and I have others in 1", stamped 25,4
I think they came in low, medium and high - and the ones you depict are AFAIK high - like these Sako 26mm High Old style Mounts Used Emma Rifles also have some, though the price is slightly different.

When I first got some of these, I read as many instructions as I could from threads such as this How to mount/adjust vintage Sako scope mounts? and then decided on how to procede.
One important message is not to overtighten the screw that clamps onto the dovetail. It is easily done, and is bad: it is knurled for fingers and has a coin-size slot for good reason, I think.

Wind-adjustment in mounts can be useful, when it isn't a PITA. One the whole, one might favour mounts which offer fewer opprotunities for cocking things up. The one-piece Optilock mounts allow some wind-adjusment by fore-and-aft movement of the forward mount - I think 1mm moves POI ~1" at 100m, or so.

Where did you pick up your original Sako mounts? I have sourced one set but want another!

Yours are the less common late pattern, nice.

Thanks - they certainly look (and act) the part well!

I think I might have bought them from a forum-member - though possibly from the 'Bay. Not really sure anymore.

Leupold made or still make mounts to fit the Sako dovetails . Whether in 30mm is another matter , but who knows . If it were me I’d check Leupold and Burris’s webpages and see if you can find anything .

Decided I need something to look forward to once all this Covid19 business dies down and I get some time away from work in Accident and Emergency.

Got a hankering for a Stutzen rifle in .243win. I'm interested in what you folks think?

Just planning to use it for stalking, dont want a moderator on it, and I already have a 270win for if I am ever lucky enough to get a chance to stalk Reds/Sika in Scotland.

I have a lovely Ruger M77 Stutzen in just now
very nice guns
cheap too as they are not popular

I had one of the earlier tang safety 77 RSI’s in 308 . The gun shot plenty well for deer , only real issue I had with it was an inconsistent trigger let off and I fixed that by putting in a RifleBasix seat kit I think it was called .After that it went from an inconsistent 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 pound trigger pull down to a very stable 1 1/2 pound trigger . I sold it to a fellow I know for about 800 pounds ten years ago . Now in the USA a nice clean unworn tang safety 77 RSI will bring about 1100 pounds .

Would love to own a Steyr, Sako or Mauser stutzen.

I currently stalk with a very practical and somewhat dull Browning A-bolt Synthetic stalker in 243. Can’t really fault it as it’s always done it’s bit if I do mine but I do hank after something different once in a while.

I have seen some nice 243s ( some belters on Guntrader) but not sure I want to go through the hassle of having to rehome my existing rifle and it does have its place.

So for those of you experienced with the stutzen way of life can I ask for opinions on living with 7x57 (275) or 308?

.243 is a superb deer round. Very accurate, flat and easy to buy or reload. Fine for reds in Scotland too and it is far quieter than a .270.

I have a .308 stutzen with 18/19in Barrel and it is lovely and balanced to carry and bring to the shoulder but it is loud and there is significant muzzle blast. I cannot see the impact of a shot like I can with the moderated .243. And I find I miss that. You don’t notice the noise when stalking but it is just as loud then as when on the range when you wear ear defenders.
No personal experience but am told 7x57 is more gentle but I can’t imagine it being that much different.

i love having the stutzen, I wanted one since drooling over bsa airsporter versions in local shop as a boy but I wouldn’t want one as my only rifle. Does that make it the Land Rover of rifles?

My Steyr one is in 7mm-08 which was a deliberate choice as I wanted a Stutzen, and 7mm-08 is essentially exactly the same as 7x57, except that it can use shorter actions and barrels more happily. And I'm very happy indeed with it. My other rifle is a 7x65R drilling, so admittedly I like to go off-piste.

lol....here’s my daily driver

Are 7mm-08 easier to find on the shelf than the 7x57?

I am not afraid of reloading but am relatively new to it. Have worked up an SST load for the 243 with some help from members here.

The reason I specifically asked about these calibres is that I currently have an empty 308 slot but have seen a nice SM 7x57 for sale.Poor timing really but it set me thinking?...

Do people think the 7x57 in a short Stutzen format will do the business once we are all pushed to non toxic?

I've found reloading about the same level of difficulty as perfecting making a decent loaf of bread, if you know what I mean. I stopped developing the bread when I thought that if I'd bought it in a shop, I'd be happy with it. Similar with reloading: it wasn't that hard to follow a process to get to a round that is at least as good as anything I'd bought and readily available. But then you can also go obsessive about it.

I had a 7x57R drilling before and that had a 24" barrel so it was really good. I don't think 20" would have obtained the best from it but it would certainly have been fine. You tailor the load to your rifle. But it would have been slower. I suspect that 7mm-08 is more future proof though. But I don't think deer know that.

Do you think this is an example of where that fast, light & Frangible or slow and heavy comes Ito play?

I’m not sure but imagine the 7x57 in Stutzen would be 19-20” so perhaps heavy for calibre with slower powder would be best?....looking for maximum thump from a short barrel 🤔
