I am looking for a few suggestions, as to whether to a variancy to exchange my
17hmr for a .22 Hornet.
I like the hmr but they're no good in wind.
My area allows 17hrm for fox which is why I got it, but I also have a .223. Munty is the only deer variant that I take, do font reslly need a bigger calibre as of yet.
Please let me kniw your thoughts

I have a thermal spotter and a thermal scope i cant get my noggin around them and prefer to use a light.
I maybe looking to get shot of the thermal stuff as its just sitting in one of my boxes.
I love using the Pard NV08SLRF thats brilliant, far better for me than thermal

Ive got to be honest and say its a fight when I open the cabinets, to whether I take a shotgun variant or a Rifle.
I grew up shoitjng shotguns from a very early age, I gave quite a few and they all take their turn out in the field lol
 
I dont use 17 hmr on fox i dont think its big enough and think foxy deserves a bit more gun, just a personal thing before anyone jumps on there keyboard telling me they shoot fox at 200yds regular away and never miss or wound, anyway i have a 22wmr for closer fox and a hornet for longer range before i step up to bigger rifles, the hornets very very accurate with 45gn factory and its pretty quiet with its hausken mod, , if you fancy it put in for it and you can reload it should you wish, obviously youl need good reason but if your putting your 17 in i cant see a problem good luck.

Warwickshire allow 17hmr for fox, i only use the 20gr small round, but devasting.
It doesn't get used much now, and I shot more rabbits with it than fox. But the ammo is too expensive to pop the bunnies.
Ive took the plunge and brought. 223 reloading kit, do I would reload the hornet as well. I may keep the Hmr and just go for a hornet and have it as a full NV set up but with the Pard
 
Re the wind issue.
It's a bit of a paradox.
Small vermin shooting the 17 is perfect and it most definitely is fox capable and my experiments led me to believe the 17gn is better than the 20gn overall.
Everyone's capabilities as a rifle shot is also different, you have to evaluate that for yourself.
Anyway, the paradox is all rounds suffer from wind affect and unless one wants to pay to really up the performance just to shoot small vermin your not going to get away from the wind issue.
Learning what you have in your or to hand will serve you better and also stop expecting every shot to connect. That only exists on YouTube.
 
I had a hornet once but the barrel was pretty poor, and I sold it as it would shoot really good groups then launch a bullet 3” from the rest. I really liked the cartridge but have never replaced it as finding a good condition hornet is quite difficult.
 
It is an interesting point and valid as after owning three hornets and looking down many a hornet barrel to confirm what I learnt, hornet is unique in that it produces water vapour like all cartridges but not enough heat to warm the barrel with just one shot leading to droplets forming just forward of the chamber causing damage.
Check before you buy.
It also does not mean a hornet is finished if there are pits there. It's just a unique trait to check for.

They can be extremely frustrating, but a great little cartridge. I had an el cheapo Savage that shot okay but nothing special. Lived on the dashboard of my Toyota. After many years I had about 6" lopped off the barrel down to a hair over 16" (min here) just to make it handier to grab off the dash and poke out the window of the Landcruiser. Inadvertently, that simple act turned it into an absolute tack driver.

I've lost count of how many rifle mass production barrels are really poor at the crown. To the untrained eye it's barely noticeable but every one improved with a polish or recut and polish.
 
I've never found wind to be a problem with the HMR, but most of my rabbit control work is done at night, and especially at this time of year, the wind tends to drop after dark. But even in the winter, when the weather is rough, I can honestly say that, especially when driving round in the truck, I've never found wind to be a problem, as I never know what the wind direction is anyway. I found it's good for foxes out to 60 or seventy yards, should I happen upon one.

I've had 22Hornets for most of my life, and like the round, possibly more from a nostalgic point of view, but all the ones I've had could have the odd blip accuracy-wise.

Get your head around the thermal and you will not believe your results mate
 
I ave the Mars 4, fantastic to look through in the dark, and image is fantastic, I just struggle to zero the damn thing.
The spotter is also fantastic image
