Superformance .222.

Hi,
After going as far as I can in developing a load for my 222 Bergara break barrel I thought I’d try some factory rounds.
Weather was inclement at rang this morning so went on 50 yd range.
Superformance 50 grain vmax and Superformance 35 grain NTX. (Non lead core)
Looks like the freshly cleaned barrel needed a few foulers.
Scope is 1.5-6 FFP (Thick reticle!) so not the best for group shooting.
I didn’t shoot over chrono; but if the ammo box info is anything to go off, trajectories pretty good out to reasonable (To me🙂👍) distances to point and shoot.

I liked the Hornady 50gn superformance in my cz.
The brass doesn't reload many times with top end loads though.
As crazy as it sounds I've always done well to ring the hell out of 222 loads.
It's only recently I've stayed close to book!
If you are struggling to find a satisfactory reload wind it up a bit Ken. The brass will take it and so will the rifle.
Tin hat on but I really don't give a poop.

Ah well, don’t get discouraged…..
Just jessing KB - loads of promise there - strange thing is a few pals did not get on with those rounds at all; everything from odd fliers to misfires…

Hi,
I just thought I’d try factory stuff and I think the 50 grain Super will do.
I’m trying to wean myself off converting money into noise to tune of 50 to 100 quid a week poking holes in paper!
I’m giving the mythical foxes a rest until the clocks go back, so a few boxes of factory stuff will suffice.

I know what you mean only too well!
A typical range day means 2x Mosin Nagants, a Mauser, 6.5x55SE and couple of .308s - not to mention the items we still have unlike your side of the Irish Sea - all of which means that running a helicopter might be cheaper….

Tried the rotorcraft and it was like standing under a cold shower ripping £50 notes up!!!
Just started to do a rough estimate for a typical range day - big mistake!
Say 30-50 rounds (usually more) each per (3 off) old rifles;
at least the same for one (or often two) .308s and/or the 6.5SE;
then throw in a bit of fun with the triple deuce;
add fuel for the 110 mile round trip; and…..
Just decided not to take this any further - who knows who may see it.
Coming dear……

You must be a wealthy man FB…..or perhaps, you could be if you didn’t shoot so much 😂
Yep - for sure and the pain in my shoulder would likely go as well.
The secret is to get the love of your life involved - buy her a gun, take her out then when she loses interest (guaranteed the first wet outing) get her to retain her fac, then my friend you can get all sorts of goodies added to her fac and you just get an on loan for them.
Simples…

Found 100 rounds of Twipple 2 x Hornady 50 grain at Livens last night so bought it via tinternet.
It was £5 per 20 cheaper than some I bought locally a couple of weeks ago, so the £25 saving on ammo went well towards the diesel for the 200 mile round trip.
Kenps.
I think it was false economy stopping reloading to save money!!!

Just been looking at Vhitavouri’s load data for 222 and one of their loads using a 50 grain bullet is only 40 fps slower than Horny’s Superformance factory ammo.

Each to their own I guess, Smelly has found a stout load works really well for him but conversely I find that I don’t really need it K. My geriatric remmy shoots MoF (Minute of Fox) all day (and night) long sending a 50gns Vmax trundling along at just South of 3,000 fps - all with only 19gns of Viht N120. Plenty heap good medicine as far as you will ever want to shoot…

That was a while ago now . I was on cfe223.
It's not very efficient charge weights wise but pretty forgiving if wound up.
I was using up some n110 recently though and stayed in book data. Pretty good. I'd buy more. I can see n120 being excellent and frugal also.

I'm currently on 40gn bullets and IMR 8280 and in book data and wow, they are flat to 200yds from the 700. I don't bother with the ballistic trickery at the moment in the Zulus. Just aim at it!

Fb;
I’ve been using your 19 x N120 load exclusively for 50/52/53 and 55 grain bullets.
Having just started using some new PPU brass I’m finding many cases with blackened areas on necks and bodies!
Thinking I’ll start at Vhits top load of 19.6 and work up to 20. See how they go accuracy wise.

Last week I fired some 19 grain loads over the Chrono.
Some were 5 thou from lands, some 10 thou and some 20 thou from lands.
The ones loaded to lands minus 10 thou were most accurate.
And, surprisingly the were the quickest.
-5 averaged 2855.
-10 Ave. 2918.
-20 Ave. 2897.
Bullets are Sierra 1410, 52 HPBT.
Cheers, Ken.

N120 was pretty good with 40 grain bullets too.

I have used Superformance 50 gr V-Max in my Sako 75 in 222. I was really impressed with them. They were accurate, fast, and had really good knock down power. I would happily use them again.

That’s interesting K - never had the smokey neck in many thousands of N120 x 19gns and 50gns Vmax including in PPU. All my 50 VMax are loaded to 2.175” in a chamber 60 thou longer so fairly short compared to others and I do apply a fairly good crimp.
Out of interest I wonder what PPU case volume is compared to others?
Many years ago BC (Before Chronographs) I worked up to 20.5 gns and 10 thou jump but didn’t get any great advantage and the thought of 1.5 gns saved per round convinced me that 19 was quite enough. Now call me old fashioned but…..

PS
My remmy hates 52gns Vmax!
