Suspended Gralloch... WHY?!

A thread that might get me suspended

I have yet to hear a convincing argument for doing a suspended gralloch on deer (so don't bring up boar please).

I've gralloched deer from under 10kg to over 100kg and never felt the need to carry a block and tackle along with gandrel gambrel (thanks @takbok ) around... maybe some like having play with a portable dungeon?!

As far as I can tell, gralloching on the ground is quick, clean and efficient. No tree or vehicle required!

Answered your own question, take the deer back to the larder to gralloch. No mess left lying around the estate and the deer is given its best start as meat.

If a suspension point is within a few yards, It gets used, no gambrels just judicious use of the drag rope, no suspension point available then my knees get a battering.

I find it most desirable as I don’t stop at evisceration and having a beast rolling around in the mud without it’s coat on is a job too far for a hose!

IMO everything depends on context: principally, where you're extracting from/to, carcase weight, and the stalker's physique. If these favour a suspended gralloch, you acquire the necessary knowhow - not hard- and kit -compact and inexpensive- and carry on, enjoying having gained the upper hand on gravity and able to work with good comfort and visibility at waist-to-eye level -where most people choose to most tasks. If that doesn't fit the context, then it would be daft not to gralloch differently in a way that does.

Really depends on circumstances but using gravity makes it a lot easier. No need for a gambrel or block & tackle either, just two S hooks & a suitable length of line. No need for trees with suitable branches either, can be done on anything resembling straight and upright - small trees, fence posts, telegraph posts etc. Why grovel around on your knees in the dirt when you can do it nice and tidy standing up? Only caveat would be if it's not in a woodland or field edge setting or when you're doing a large animal where size & weight prevents it.

I suspect that the age and mobility of the stalker is a big factor in many cases. The older you get, the less you want to grovel about at ground level. Standing up straight is less punishing. I’m 48. Sob.

Yes, because no one should be doing a suspended gralloch!

From what I’ve seen and I’ve seen a few grallochs in my time ,suspended makes for a cleaner interior to the carcass without the blood spilling behind the diagram .That from what I can see is the only benefit of suspended v field .

If you bleed it properly (another thread entirely ) through the jugular notch this is pretty much a non issue.
