Swallow, Swift and Martin watch!

First Swallow on Monday 7th, only a fleeting glance in the lee of the big conifers. Nice to see good weather for the arrival.

Still loads of pinks (1000s) about and we have been moving them off the winter wheat (about 6" high now) and the "peeping" spring barley regularly. A big load disappeared on Tuesday morning, only for another lot to arrive on the Wednesday. There will be still birds here till the first week in May.
Plenty of reports of big skenes going up the glens the last week or so.
We had a big load build up last month and they went away early.

About 15 Wigeon hanging about the mouth of the burn at the bottom of the garden.

Osprey seen along the bay a bit, bit I've not seen it yet as at my bit the easterly breeze makes it a bit choppy for fishing and it will do better up the bay a bit.

The "squadron of Tree Sparrows are going about the farm yard gathering nesting materials and going in the holes in the masonry on the older farm buildings.

Plenty of bats going about and to be honest they have been out and about throughout the winter.

The wildflower mix was sown in the field behind the house last week and as usual one or two muppets from the village are still walking their dogs in there.

All the burns and rivers are pretty low and the spring barley will be glad of the puckle rain we are supposed to get on Sunday.

There is a pied wagtail up the farm and his daily routing the last week is to sit on the van or pickup mirror and have a go at his reflection.

The goldfinches have been lurking about the apple tree with intent to nest and there are a pair of starlings in the nest box above one of the sheds.

Cheers

Lots of House Martins about the place here in West London, they're already returning to their old nesting sites in local riding stables etc
Still no sign of Swifts though, I think we need the winds to shift back to SW to bring them here

Flying over the village just now 2 Swallows 4 House Martins !

I’m sure they are later this year by @ 3 days, let’s hope we see lots more soon, the weather’s not great for them, you can guarantee when it’s lambing time round here it rains.

But still they lift your spirits when they arrive.
