Swiss Army knife

If you do go for it they're cheaper on amazonk now £63 but I paid 40 on black Friday.
Not used it in the field yet due to illness but by eck its sharp 👌

I have both these knives and I prefer the original hunter. The liner lock is harder to use with freezing fingers, on the hunter XT. The side slide lock on the traditional hunter is easy to use, slide the lock and press the back of the blade against your backside closes without faff or loss of digits. The XT can be opened one handed the traditional nail nick in the hunter requires two hands.

Cold wet days, blood on the knife, lack of light, amount of stuff getting stuck onto the knife all as made me go with fixed blade. Not sure how practical it would be when you need to fumble with the folding bits. Keeping it simple usually is a lot easier.

As above, Couldn't have said it any better myself 👌🏻

Just a quick one - does anyone use a SAK for the field knife? Only that my Dad sent me the link to one called The Hunter (!) but what I like about it is that it has a locking saw, skinning and main blade. I always carry a SAK anyone but the everyday carry version! Definitely not suitable for gralloching. There are two options: the one with the deer pic on and the orange more tactile version:

I've had a SAK in my pocket for 25 years and use it pretty much every day. Just thought the Hunter version might make a good stalking pocket knife? Anyway, does anyone use one or has used one?
Cheers
I am post site the saw doesn’t lock. Will check later as I have one somewhere

Folders are a poor choice regards hair , blood , meat ! I have a stack of different SAK folders , steel is real soft but can be super sharp easy with a strop . Locking i personally feel is an essential on a folder for use on deer ! ( Which case might as well have a fixed blade knife under UK law )
A SAK is a brilliant EDC for not a lot of money , so when the scales drop off nobody really cares . The edge will be lost on maybe as few as just one stag so dont even think it if you aint a wizz at that task . Everyone needs a SAK though not for the stuff we do on the deer

The scales dropping off gives a nice excuse to fashion some new ones from something more appropriate!

yeah, and Victorinox actually markets the " upgrade " . Cant imagine the likes like me getting away with away with such a cheeky ruse though ! You made your own or bought it i note they sell them, the walnut ones must make them a fair good margin for sure .
I just super glue the red plastic ones back when they fall off .

Swiss Army knives are nice things to have in a pocket or picnic basket. A gentleman should have the ability to open a bottle of decent wine when required.

But - A leatherman or similar makes a much better multitool to carry on your belt to fix things on the vehicle, boat, aeroplane or firearm.

But a fixed bladed knife makes a much better tool for cutting, gralloching, preparing food etc.

With a good leatherman (which includes a saw), a decent stout mora type knife, an adjustable spanner, a firestick and a small sharpening stone you can pretty much do most jobs.

I make my own, as there's nothing complicated involved, particularly if you use photocopies of the old ones as a pattern.

I've done all sorts of scales, from exotic woods to regular G10, and you can easily do both sides of a SAK from a standard single knife scale blank.

Buying a SAK Classic, Pioneer or Floral and re-handling it makes for a satisfying weekend job in the workshop.

a leatherman say with a knife blade is now illegal as EDC . Because of course they lock! before all this pandering to the press and the government issuing so many more takes on mans oldest tool - to fix an issue that actually needs direct on the streets action against street dealers who are already breaking enough laws dealing ! The knives are only being carried to protect one snot rag who cannot defend his cash and product without one and isn't high enough on the food chain to have a handgun - yet !

surely you meant a few hours on a weekend , not a whole weekend on a sub £50 knife right ? Yeah i thought about doing one a couple of month ago as i had lost one scale , fortnight later i found it on the drive and just glued it back on .
I would get a nice hand made locking knife from a maker but then you cant carry locking knives as EDC .. Looks a tidy job ! I think the awl tool is an issue regards EDC and an over keen copper perhaps ?

Not if it’s a mounted copper, and the horse has a stone in its hoof!

If I am in town I don’t carry a knife or multitool - I don’t need one.

If I am on the boat, or out on the farm, shooting, stalking, in walking etc I have a perfectly good reasons to have such tools on my person or to hand. And I have a swiss army knife in our picnic hamper for the sorts of occasions when the hamper is in use.

I’ll happily spend a weekend working on a knife, a shaving brush, a stick, or a priest.

None of them are worth a lot, and it’s all for my own pleasure or as gifts, but it’s worth it to turn out a decent job that you can have pride in when it’s used.

I carry all the time but only a legal SAK . However you cannot technically go into a school , government building etc with one . Two RFDs told me about the day they went into court to give evidence in a case both having a SAK in their pockets , it created a bit of a flap but the guard just kept hold of said items until they left , collecting them on the way out !
