Fraud is fraud. And frankly it exposed it (regardless of whether it was intentional or not, which it wasn't), he got a telling off by the landowner as the rights weren't his to lease and hopefully it stopped him committing it in future.
I was 18 at the time and leased the rights to help get deer condition on my certificate, as this was long before AOLQ was a thing in Sussex. The chap was well aware of my intentions to get my conditions changed. His number was written on the document by him and submitted to Sussex with my change of conditions letter and FAC. Instead, the feo found the landline for the landowner (rather than use the supplied mobile number) and the landowner was very shocked to say the least, that the keeper was subletting, given there was a clause in his contract saying he was not allowed to do so. I got a call from the feo telling me this and also a call from the keeper saying I had grassed him up.. when I had no idea he was being naughty.. just unhappy to get caught and lose his extra earnings. A sore loser being the best phrase I guess.

Open and shut case and there is no defence for it on his behalf. He just wanted a few more pennies and I may not have been the only person at said time. Some people in the industry just don't care unfortunately. On top of that, i never saw a deer on the grounds.

Lessons learned on both sides.

Question for clarification here just for my own mind….. IF you were out on that land (either of the examples above where keeper was subletting), and you shot a deer with your rifle without the keeper there (ie not direct supervision) and got stopped by the actual landowner or the Police….. would it count as poaching because the gamekeeper didn’t have permission to give you permission?

I should think yes is the answer.

You are, unintentionally admittedly, shooting over ground on which you have no permission to do so.

Whether anything came of it when the facts came to light is another matter.

Stuart stokes tried telling me there was wild boar and hundreds of deer on the grounds him and his father manage in Shropshire. No plan on cull figures. No lease agreement from landowner or agent. No plan on how to book a morning/evening out for yourself apart from he said WhatsApp but can’t really remember. Told him I would not be joining lol feel sorry to the people who have fallen into his lies in the hope they can shoot some deer!
I can confirm it was me that blew the whistle on Stokes ..He was a farm labourer. He had no shooting or stalking rites. He doesn't own a fac or sg .
He's had over 60 lads pay him good money . Yes a lot have been paid back but a lot hasn't.
The land owner is fully aware of his antics and cooperating with the police .
I have emailed those involved with details for the police. The process is long and complicated but hopefully Stokes and his moll will pay the price .

If you are referring to the land at Brockton , the answer from the officer dealing with it is No.
Money was paid in good faith , maps and Contracts were sent out . I have emailed West Mercia police to get this in writing.

He’ll pay the price when it catches up with him.

Ah ok so in that particular one the FEO has accepted that money was paid in good faith and rights assumed to be legit. That’s a nice pragmatic approach from them
