Tall larder fridge

I've used one for several years. As other posters have said make sure it is a tall one. Mine was £40 off Ebay from a house kitchen refurb. It'll take two roe and it's also where any rabbits/pheasant/duck etc live until I process them. Incredibly useful to any field shooter. Drilling for a bar isn't really required - just fit something across the tray mounts or if you're lucky as I was it came with all it's shelves and a steel winerack which sits on the top mounts and I hang roe or game from that. I did worry about circulation but just opening and checking say once a day should sort that but I also bought a USB wired small desk fan and leave that to run periodically in the fridge with the wire leading outside to the plug. Especially if the inhabitant is a little damp. But never had a problem anyway with any mould. Just keep a decent fridge thermometer inside though to check the temp is in the right range. Plenty of previous threads on this subject.

Any chance of some pictures? I quite like the idea of doing similar with mine :thumb:

I cheated and bought this. It's just a 12v computer fan with a variable resistor and a plastic housing. To be honest you could probably knock up a hombrewed affair for a fraction of the price.

This topic came up a while ago. I saved this photo to copy the idea.

This was my fridge :thumb: I subsequently modified it by cutting out the front bar so it was much easier to hang a deer rather that having to dip in under and lift up. Gone over to a freebie double-door Coke fridge now with much more room. The type of fridge with a recirculating fan is best, otherwise add Bushwear’s Tenderum fan to circulate the air.

I knocked this up as a quick fix (a few years ago) whilst I await a metal one being made.
threaded bar from Wickes nice and snug.

I have a hotpoint RL175
Its a bit short but I used the steel wine rack and some ally angle and mounted as close to the top as possible .
Drilled holes no bother with care .
Easily takes 2 roe and have had a 40 kilo fallow in it .

If it helps anyone City Furniture Clearance, Whittlesey PE7, have a tall wine cooler, ex-British Sugar country fair hospitality, not cheap but neg.
I've no connection with seller. They are open by appt.

Mine had minimal in the way of anything to mount brackets on. I drilled and put a metal pole through. Capped off the ends of the pole from the outside and that’s as good as it’s needed to be. No fan. No hassle with mould. I keep it clean and carcasses are rarely in there over 10 days. Can get three in there at a push and the sides of the fridge hold it no bother.

On my indesit fridge it’s only insulation in the sides but some have workings. Check before you drill.

much the same as others posted was lucky there was a fan fitted already had two fallow in at a push ideal for roe and munt in the summer months4C9B8692-613B-486B-AF07-A6555B4190A5.webp4C9B8692-613B-486B-AF07-A6555B4190A5.webp

If your a bit limited with height cut a couple of length of string 2ft long should be plenty, Tie a sliding loop at the end of each and place around the knuckles of the front legs then pull the legs back towards the neck and tie behind the neck and cut off any surplus (should be done soon after gralloch before rigor mortis sets in)
This should shorten the overall carcass length by 3'' or 4''

I got a local stainless fabricator to make me a rail that slid into the standard shelf supports in a Foster fridge, it was expensive, but it was handy (not essential) for the Food Establishment visit. If you're handy you might knock something up yourself. A foster commercial fridge can be picked up cheaply on ebay and this one fits three fallow and gets them to 7C in short order, then to 4C after that.

PM me if you would like rail dims/images/material specs.

Got the fridge from RTH traders (Manchester I think)IMG-2236.webp

Cheap chiller of FB and something welded up locally. Worked out quite reasonably.

Hi Guys,

I am currently looking at buying a second hand fridge and converting it for deer with the Bushwear / Tenderum kit.

It is clear that the hanging bar needs to be installed asymmetrically - ie: nearer the back than the middle.

My question is - how much clearance should I allow between the hanging rail and the back (and top) of the fridge?

Thanks for any advice you can offer (before I start drilling!).

James

Where are you from James? I would just put it as high up as you can and in the centre. Any bar you can get hold will work, (might work out cheaper than buying the kit) just make sure you got the right size drill bit and that the cooling fins are at the back of the fridge, so you don't drill through them.

In the middle of the wall is fine, as for the right size drill bit, the bushwear kit comes with the right size bit, I made one this year with the kit and fan and it's fine.
If your kit doesn't have a drill bit I can send you mine to use.

Good tip, thank you

Dont buy a Tenderum fan, for £35 there is no need for a variable speed, Fridge fans are available from a company called Polestar and they do mail order.

I have no connection, but that is where I buy my fridge fans from, they have an online catalog so you can check out what you are buying.

Could you please send me some more details of the rail please

I now have a double foster fridge, after gifting my tall bekontype with tenderum bar... There is ‘commercial’ type racking on both sides. Would quite like to see your dimensions etc as I was going to build an internal double A frame but this might be better. Thanks if you can .

Follow the tenderum instructions-I didnt and put it in the middle... the way it hangs some larger animals touch the front door with a load of room at the back. Put it 3/5 the way in.... awkward animals can go in the other way....

If you can find a Tefcold display fridge there does not seem to be anything that you can damage by drilling a hole through the top of the fridge, I opened out an eyebolt and have hung a gambrel from it. Usually manage two roe back to back, and using the eyebolt you get the full height of the fridge, another advantage of this fridge is that it has fan for air circulation.
