Telos disappointment.

I think Pulsar are a victim of their own marketing here
They have trailed the Telos for so long, made a huge deal out of it's 18mK sensor which, although better than the 25mK of the Helion isn't earth shattering and to be honest will never be noticed by most users.
Look at the Thomas Jacks video - yes the Telos image is better, but only marginally and there's nothing within shooting range that would not be seen and identified equally well with either monocular
The situation has not been helped by regular promises on delivery dates which have not been met
In other words, they appear to have overpromised and underdelivered
IMHO they should be pushing the upgradeability much more, and if the prices to upgrade the lens or sensor or add an LRF are reasonable, then that will be good for users
For Pulsar, the biggest plus with upgradeability is that it reduces the chances of users deserting to another brand when new products come along.
Losing existing users and not attracting new users must make the high heid yins at Pulsar lose sleep at night because existing thermal users and potential new users have never had so much choice.
The other day, I did a wee survey of the market for thermal monoculars (not riflescopes or binoculars) and came up with 12 different brands and over 100 different models currently available on the UK market

Cheers

Great Info as usual Bruce

Alasdair the Helion and Telos models have huge Super Amoled displays and they work great if you wear glasses, the screen size feels much larger and more viewable than the earlier Axion range.
Thank you that's really helpful. - I'll need to get one to try for myself now! Alasdair

I really rate mine mate - it’s actually a pleasure to use with all the background detail.
I got a good fair price for my xp50 hellion 2pro and a good bit deal on the telos so for the sake of £700 it’s worth me changing I think, I like the shape of the telos (without the lrf) it should slide in and out the pocket nice and easy

If you are planning on using it for stalking, I think it will be a great unit. The upgradability part of it is worth the change on its own.

However if you’re just foxing and covering large area I really think it’s a let down. Went out last night for one last go, but unfortunately it’s in the post being returned as we speak. Fingers crossed you get on well with yours 🤞🏻

This upgrade ability has been much discussed and marketed, but my understanding is that it won’t be available until next year? I also think I read somewhere that the units will need to go back to Lithuania?

I assume that the two most obvious upgrades are upgrading the sensor from the 640 one to the 1280 one in the merger XL’s and adding LRF. Maybe I am being a negative but the price difference between the two mergers is something like £1200. Therefore I can’t see the telos upgrade being much less and maybe more if you add engineering time and postage to the equation. If my randomly made up figures are correct it might be a better idea to sell the Telos secondhand for £2k ish and add the £1200 to this to buy say the latest Hik unit with a similar sensor (assume they are working on one). You would then get the latest unit with a full warranty etc. The addition of lrf is a similar story the price difference is £300 between the two models so I assume the upgrade cost will be £300 plus engineering plus postage.

This also doesn’t account for the brexit based postage issue and time away.

Blooming hek is it that bad🙈 but yes it’s soley for stalking to be fair, I use my mergers when foxing to be fair but on the deer I like to spot with the thermal and use my zeiss rf’s to have a good look at the animal (hense what I didn’t go for the lrf telos).

Picked up the telos today, nice shape, feels solid, battery removal is ok but would of preferred a wee lip to get hold of it with, it’s absolutely bouncing here this afternoon and it’s picking up pheasants at 180 yards no problem at all with a good solid outline or there head (the hottest part today), I can easily I’d a sheep out to 370 (that’s as far as I can see from my front door as I’m not going out in that ! Clearer than the hellion xp 50 pro in my opinion and feels nicer in the hand. The zoom function is a lot better I like that. I look forward to getting used to it more and seeing how it preforms when out stalking ( that’s it’s job for me). Good deal at under £3k

Any further reviews from those lucky few to get their hands on one already, and provide a review? Has it lived up to expectations?

I’m yet to bite the bullet and upgrade to one…

Used mine the other night out stalking, to be fair my mates one was a xp38 or xq38 hellion (I can’t mind what model the 38 is) but the telos was night and day compared to that. I like it and have no regrets buying it at all. I’m glad I went for the non lrf one though! I think the lrf would be a pain to got in and out of the pocket but I do have a lrf in my bins so that’s why I chose the normal model. Really happy with it, clear, easy to use, zoom is better than the button zoom on the hellion, feels a more stronger handlable unit.

Any further reviews ? Keep looking at it but not sure pro 2 can be beaten yet
I had a XP50 Pro 2 and have looked through a Telos non RF a few times now. For me, the Telos is significantly better, though I must condede I wasn't the biggest fan of the Pro 2. Can't really put my finger what it was though, possibly a bit "woolly" an image.

Mines crystal clear can even see cartridges people have left at their peg when out foxing , think maybe I need to try one and compare

I think every Pulsar thermal I've ever looked through has what you describe as a "wooly" image and what I describe as looking at the scene through a thin net curtain.
It's just how Pulsar process the signal from the sensor.
They put more emphasis on target detail than they do on overall contrast
Compare that with most, if not all the Chinese made thermals like HIK, where the image is usually much brighter, with higher contrast - giving what I would describe as a "punchier" image
That brighter. higher contrast image makes detecting hot spots easier, but provides less detail of the actual target
Which type of image is preferable comes down to personal preference.

Cheers

Bruce
