Where was all this freezing rain they forecast?
I decided last night no point going out before light with a rifle, I'll take a shotgun.
Then I thought, that old al48 hasn't had a pheasant for a couple of years.
Well this morning I drew a blank pheasant wise but downed a few crows.
There was a problem though. The cold was affecting cycling and I needed to turn the collet around to allow easier cycling, could I undo the magazine nut? Could I heck!
Returning home I got some chores done and spent a couple of hours with my Mrs and then went out for the last couple of hours of light.
But at home I turned the collet around and immediately could tell the action was easier to operate.
I love long recoil autos. So simple and very reliable.
The afternoon produced two nice birds shot with an old auto, with old ammo and by an old grump with a bad foot!
As I hobbled back home facing the western sky I was rewarded with watching woodcock flighting up and down the fields. It was magical.

Ahh good old Eley Grand Prix - all I ever used to use when I first started shooting in the late 70's - think I still have few somewhere...

If they are that old they might be unstable, possibly dangerous! Send them to me and I will, free of charge of course, dispose of them for you 😊

Glad too - I never used to be able to hit anything with them in any case, so maybe they were unstable when I bought them?

BTW, I need to let you know I am an African Prince and need some help to bring my fortune into the UK to invest in the West Midlands... Please send me £5000 and your bank details and I will ensure you are well rewards with wealth beyond your wildest dreams... 🤪

Eley Grand Prix 28g 6s fibre wad - the last 12g cartridges I ever bought for game shooting before going over to the 20g. They worked a treat & when I put the pattern in the right place were more than up to bringing down some good pheasants 👍

Impax 6 or 7 the best patterning cartridge I ever used in 12 bore. Watched a terrific shot with a pair of Churchill's on many occasions, in Warwickshire, imp cyl both barrels, 30-40 yds up pheasants. A right and left almost every time.

Still using Grand prix in my Cogswell they just work and nice and easy on the shoulder is it me or do they smell different when fired

Is the damp cordite they are still trying to get shot of 😂.
Some of the old cases used paper base wads. Like paper cases they smell distinctive.
