Last November a mate and I had arranged a weekend stalking in Bedfordshire, our hope was either a CWD or Muntjac buck, we had arranged the weekend with Jason from muntjacstalker.com.
Jason had booked us in to the local B&B which was excellent, this was next door to the local pub which was also excellent and it served fantastic food, if all else failed then we’d been well catered for.
The first mornings stalking Jason took me and my mate out with my mate stalking and me following about 15-20yards behind. Within 30 minutes after already seeing 3 CWD my mate was on a Munty buck out in the open and about 80yds away, off his quad sticks it was straight forward and a clean kill, it was a lovely buck. Two hours later it was my turn and I was also on a Munty buck although Jason had said 3 or 4 times “it’s there” I eventually saw it, or at least I could see an eye and a little bit of its head hidden in a bush, eventually it moved and the shot presented itself at 60yds, I would have liked to say it was a clean shot but unfortunately it moved just as I squeezed the trigger and I hit it a little bit further back than I would have preferred, it went down and a second shot finished the job. We’ve both been out Muntjac stalking with so many other so called professional stalkers you wouldn't believe, and here we were first stalk and both of us had shot a nice buck.
That afternoon we went out again for Chinese Water Deer, and although we had seen half a dozen or more there were no teeth to be seen.
The following morning we were out again and both of us were feeling pretty pleased with ourselves, but it wasn’t over yet, again within 30 minutes my mate was on a CWD with teeth that a blind man could see, 170 yards and off his quad sticks my mate took his time and waited for the shot to present itself and it did - What a beautiful animal! A silver medal buck– Wow!
I then followed Jason with my rifle at the ready there were deer everywhere (I'd counted 19 in total that morning), but which one to stalk? I followed Jasons lead after a pair of deer one of which Jason was convinced was a buck, as we stalked after them to our right was a deer in the hedgerow with its head down grazing, we stopped and waited for it to raise its head and after 10 or 15minutes it lifted its head and its teeth were clearly visible. At 120 yards off my sticks the shot was clean and precise and after a 30 yard run the deer dropped, when we got to it my grin must have been one like you’d expect on a Cheshire cat. It was also a silver medal! Does it get better than this? – YES!
Jason caped my heads and sent them to Dave at Pennine Taxidermy, I’ve had the shoulder mounts back from Dave for a couple of weeks now and it’s as though they are alive – what an artist this guy is!
I now have my Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer (complete with medal) on the wall and every time I look at them I smile, I’ve also go the meat in the freezer, so I can not only see them I can taste them.
If you are one of those people that spends a fortune on stalking with a professional who only wants to take out foreigners because they can afford to pay more and then you get to sit in a high seat on the off chance a deer might walk past, then stalking with Jason from muntjacstalker.com isn’t for you, if however you want to stalk and see deer at a reasonable price then it might be worth contacting him. :):):)
