The New "Ratel" from Brock & Norris

Good Evening, I have a Ratel Rifle built by Mike, mine has a 20 inch Border barrel in Light Varmint profile fitted to a Ratel action which is very similar to a Stiller. the whole lot is fitted into a McMillan M40 stock with adjustable cheek piece. It has a 20moa picatinny rail and I have had consistent 10" groups with it at 800yds. I haven't yet managed to get any further distances yet. It has killed a lot of deer in the 2 years I have had it. Its a real tack driver and bombproof to boot. Treecare I am not a million miles from you if you would like to come and try it out. Drop me a line at info@hawkestreeservices.co.uk if you want any further info.

Kind regards

Steve

If memory serves Steve, you were shooting that in the terrible weather , howling wind and pimply sissing down with rain. yours respectfully Mike Norris, Brock and Norris Custom Rifles

Hello Steve
Thanks for getting in touch, I am a little slow. it looks great, I'll email you direct, sort out a date.
Take care Stewart

Amazing accuracy. I've got a question, you said 18" barrel specified, why is that?
Steves rifle was a non typical that we built in 7mm08. (only two have ever been done in this caliber) and it needs a 20 inch tube minimum to get the full performance from that caliber. The 308 however is quite happy with the 18 inch tube and that is our standard configuration for the Ratel. Yours respectfully Mike Norris Brock and Norris Custom Rifles

I had the pleasure of shooting a Ratel, here's the target that's a five round group the low right shot I pulled ! even so the group can be covered with a five pence piece. I'd say its probably the most accurate rifle I have shot, and I've shot a few over 40 yearsratel target2.webp

looks nice but id still use7mm rem mag for distance 1000yards is no problem with 162gamax just don't get this 308 stuff for distance the drop is crap on the 308 falls like a brick

handles bigger pills and epic volumes of data on drop and drift, loads, bullet choice, etc. etc. etc. more pleasant to shoot and longer barrel life.

that said, in most instances the 7mmRM p1sses all over the .308 if it comes to light-medium weight game or paper punching at ranges of maybe 400-1000 yds

Great looking rifle Rob but 18" barrel and 1000m capability does not quite add up in my book but good luck in your attempts.

Ian.

yeah, add another 10" and you're getting there.

1000m capable..yep, the bullet will 'get there' might be rolling along the ground the last 200yds though...LOL

Let me apologise for this post, after all according to my wife my name is Victor these days Meldrew that is! but it does make my blood boil when I read and hear comments about the alleged range limits of short barrelled 308's. These comments are made by people who do not have enough knowledge of ballistics or experience of shooting at range. Just consider this, a 180 grain Sierra 2160 loaded in front of 41 grains of IMR 3031 produces 2495 fps at the muzzle of an 18" barrel, at 1000 yds this bullet is still traveling at 1215 fps, yes it is supersonic! and it still produces 590 ft lb. so 1000yds isn't possible with an 18" 308........ COBBLERS!

My 16" 308 is supersonic @1000 using ramshot big game and the 208 Amax! I've found that really heavy bullets loose far less speed in short barrels than light bullets do
