The out yesterday or today thread and...

It seems it is nest chucking out time of year: my birdfeeder and garden have had so many squirrel visits in recent weeks I realised it was time to re-engage.

3 squirrels stopped in two days. All young. Also prowling the garden is a big female. Never holds still long enough...My guess is the three unwary young had been her litter this year.

The wife bought a new squirrel trap. So far, it is as effective as the one it was supposed to replace. Good thing the HW100 is shooting true as ever.

I use the simplest cage trap going, put under a bird feeder or table or tree they like, walnuts in shell at the back. Peanuts, monkey nuts, maize, bird food.
If they dont get caught quick, lock the trap open and let them feed. If they still wont trap you have now got a point they will play with the walnut because they cant get it out.

Having dusted off the HW100, I became aware that, once fully charged, the rifle was losing pressure ever so slowly over time. Even with no shots fired.

To isolate whether leak was the cylinder or rifle, I detached filled cylinder from rifle. Sure enough, cylinder lost pressure over time apart from rifle.

Following Fairy liquid bubble detection detailed by YT vids, I found a slow-growing bubble on the tiny hole at the regulator end of the cylinder. O rings now ordered!

I take it all back. My wife was right. The new squirrel trap is much better than the old one: today it beguiled the very wily female squirrel [mahoosive, half-a-housebrick-in-weight] to its last meal.

That is the very good news.

The bad news is that there is another male squirrel in the garden, and I watched him semi-dislocate his shoulder to slither through the songbird-sized apertures of the mesh protecting the bird table.

Suffice to say the new trap is already hosed and reloaded with yet another final supper...

Nice early start today - in the field for 4 am
20 mixed corvids - mainly crows
2 magpies in the trap

Lovely morning - now lets have some rain please
Fair play to you. The older I get the less inclined I feel to be out that early. Just had a call from one of the dairy farms that the corvids are back and making a right mess in the maize clamps ... popped down and plenty about so thats Sunday morning sorted...hopefully I can still use a shotgun and hit stuff

Balsam pulling....bloody torture  Fair play to you...you deserve a few pints 👍

One of my mates shoots 1,000s of corvids but never starts before 10 a.m as he is retired and has sense ...never seems to reduce the amount he shoots. I much prefer first thing (well within reason (I like to be out and set up about 6 this time of year)) ..at least if its slow you still have the bulk of the day to do something else :)
