I carry three knives when I hunt: A small "tourist" knife from Germany with bone handle and brass fittings. Has a 3.5" Solengen blade. I bought that knife second hand for $2 in 1980. It holds and edge and has gutted every head of big game I've taken in the last 41 years. The next is a 15 year old Martini with rubber grips and a heavy 5" blade. That is my field knife. I can split a rib cage easily with that knife and it is also one that holds a superior edge. The last is a "Barracuda" folder: Blaze orange body and it uses disposable autopsy scalpel blades. This is for skinning.
I know this thread was supposed to be about custom, or semi custom knives to die for but for some it's just a knife. It only matters where the metal hits the meat.~Muir

I don’t know if you actually read my original post but it was nothing to do with custom or semi custom knives ‘to die for’. I wanted to know if anyone knew of a knife that would suit me without having to buy a custom knife.

How about the WM1?

I carry one as a neck knife when stalking.

The victorinox rabbit knife is a little belter for roe and muntjack.bit flexible but strong and wicked sharp.brilliant handle as well

I wasn’t having a go at all, merely interested with the thought process. It’s your knife so crack on!! I can see your point about taking back straps off but I use a boning knife for that which is probably better still. Shame about the plastic sheath, I would have bought that off you 😉
I suspect the postage might have killed the deal.
A boning knife would be better, and if I'm close enough to the vehicle to carry the animal out whole I use the one I've got at home.
Mostly, though, I am a long way from the car in hard country. I usually hunt in the mountains, and consider every gram very carefully - my overnight/weekend pack - including tent, sleeping bag, food and pack weighs 11 kg, so I'm not carrying a spare anybloodythingatall. The butcher style Victorinox etc knives need a steel to touch the edge up regularly during processing, and they aren't a good shape for skinning, so there is another knife and sheath..... The PHK will do a couple of big reds without needing sharpening, so in the kit it goes.
YMMV, and probably does.20210606_085926.jpg20210606_085912.jpg

Good job!

A mora isn’t anything like the knife that I was talking about.
As long as you have a more for the tough larder work, removing heads, legs etc. Saves resharpening or chipping your ‘perfect knife’ or your butchery knife.

everyone should have a more, they are too cheap not to own one.

Richie 65x55 Nancarrow knifes made me this one recently to the size and shape I wanted, the handle was made to the size and shape of my hand.
Used all sorts of knives over past 45 years but this keeps its edge and nice to use

Nice touch with the matching kirinite lanyard fob but don’t tell me it doesn’t get in the way in use!

I’ve always thought why spend the money on a knife when a cheap one works
Now I know why people get a knife made always sharp only needs a touch up every few deer and it’s made to fit my hand along with a shape that I find easy and good to use. Wish I had done it years ago

'Reader's Knives'! And, just like the original, there's some right pigs on here that should never be seen in public. Some of you just have no shame.
