THE PRETEND KEEPER

Lovely day today, very cold, very still but for the most part the birds got up well, we had a few youngsters shooting with us today and my mates little lad got to shoot a shotgun for the first time at pheasants and managed to get his first bird on the last drive of the day. They accounted for 24 pheasants and 2 woodcock today for a crazy amount of shots but on days like this where the kids are shooting numbers are irrelevant, after the day a few of the kids wanted to have a bash at the squirrels, but by this time I was knackered so I’ll have to sort out a day when we are finished for a bit of drey bashing. It was off to the pub for me for a warm and a shandy 👍IMG_1462.webpIMG_1467.webpIMG_1469.webpIMG_2366.webp

Some may find the amount of "vermin" controlled on our little shoot interesting
Being there for many a long year and now over the last 5/6 years having the time to really get on top of stuff is making a massive difference to the shoot - and the other wildlife

Fox 48
Rat 571
Squirrel 288
Stoat 2 - must try harder - as sighting are becoming regular
Crow 206
Magpie 60
Jay 15
Jackdaw 31

This is just off our shoot - i shoot many many hundreds of crows and jackdaws at a few farms close by too

Interestingly foxes culled have dropped from mid hundreds the previous 3 years - maybe getting on top of them and seeing a crow is an oddity - we had previously had flocks and flocks on the feeders

that's a good result on the vermin control 👍.
I've found over the years that when you first move onto an area the fox count is usually high especially if they haven't been controlled well then drops to a steady level.
I think avian pest's depend on what's being grown around you,it does around me.
anyway a really good result and it should give the none pest species' a fighting chance, now it's only the weather 😆.
phil.

Great stuff. Yep fox numbers will be higher initially but once you start getting on top of them the numbers in subsequent years will be lower.

Especially now with thermal.

I've got farms now with no foxes on at all.

Been out with the 22 knocking a few rats and squirrels today and this evening when i have got a round stuck in the barrel
Trip to the gunshop in order to sort it out - but i thought i would remove the thermal and put it back on the pump action hushpower. Its a pain to carry about but does the job - anyway as i was looking i wondered would the mounts fit my FAC semi auto - and happy days yes they do !
So cant wait to get back out on the rats with a FAC semi shotty with thermal - happy and productive nights ahead !

Are you still on top of the foxes as you haven't posted many results lately

Morning Nick
The last 1 i shot was end of December - been out maybe 10/12 times since and although i have seen one several times i have not managed to catch up with it
I would say just about on top of them but need to be vigilant
