The seven mm itch

I got a RM when I was looking for a husqvarna 1900 in 270. I really like it, don’t mind the kick with a mod for hunting use (but spent a while on the range getting used to it and it all does add up). I haven’t yet used it to anywhere near its extremeties but knowing I can experiment in long range terms adds a nice dimension.

eye wateringly expensive in ammo though, unless I have missed something.

Win factory 7rm here is the equiv of 25 quid pommy. How does that compare

7x57 or 275 Rigby does everything you want it to and does it well. Normal make good brass, 139grn SST are acurate and effective. What more do you want.

I was looking into CH`s musings today and he had a few words to say. I am in the process of buying a 7x64 Brenneke even though my own seven mill will be 40 in a couple of years.

In performance the 7mm Magnums tread close on the heels of the .300 Magnums. Little or nothing hits harder at long range than a 7mm Magnum, and it is distinctly more pleasant to shoot than a .300 Magnum. This has endeared the Big 7's to generations of shooters, and made the Remington version the best selling of all magnum cartridges. It is adequate for all North American big game, and one of the world's finest all-around cartridges.

Just clinched the deal bought a zkk600 in the 7x64 Brenneke that will go with its big bro 9.3x 64 currently being built.

Now we must ask why when I have a 7mm Rem Mag..well the answer is "just because" ha ha.

;)No other reason needed John. I love my 30-06, but that probably going to serve you equally as well as the 7mm Rem Mag, except at extreme distance. But who hunts at that distance anyway.

Yes that is spot on JindyD.
I reiterate why? well the answer is "just because"

Hey John the only ones I caN pick up locally are some fancy RWS (shoot well to be fair) and they are nearly £50 a box.

Thats a schit price, surely S+B are available, anyway you can stuff them yourself and 20 will become 100 over the year.

I looked at ammo in 7 x64 last night, its a fair sort of price in S+B but my old cobber will reload for me anyway.

Sellier & Bellot 7x64 Brenneke 140 Grain Soft Point (20pk) $38

Depends what you want it for? I have a .280Ai which is a long action seriously accurate longer barrelled set-up which can seriously perform if stoked right up, similar to a 7mm Rem Mag. I also wanted a shorter barrelled lighter rifle for a woodland stalking set-up so I went for a 7mmx08. I've just got a Blaser R8 Pro Success in 7mmx08 which I haven't even fired yet so can't really comment on! However, it is best of both worlds as it is a relatively short rifle due to the action, but still has a fairly impressive 23" barrel length. 7mm is a good all-round calibre for UK and even satisfies the DEFRA recommended minimum (.270) for wild boar. Scratch that itch - you won't regret it!

Sadly we have very few gun shops within reasonable strike and all the ones I called either don’t stock 7mm Rm or they are expensive. I have a Lee loader in 7mm rm and will do some more work with it to try and get a reasonable load. I keep the gun at my mums in Scotland so it doesn’t come out too often so the ammo price isn’t a complete killer (just annoying!)

I really loved my 7x57. Lovely calibre it should be law that everyone with a FAC should have one :-D

Whatever you get - 7x57, 7x64, .280 Rem, 7mm RM - invest in a single stage press or even Lee Hand Press, scales, Lee Collet Die Set for just neck sizing as well as full length sizing, and start loading your own ammo, especially for the larger 7s. It will save you a bundle, let you shoot more, is fun, can have loads unavailable on the store shelves, and load mild loads for smaller game and lots of practice.
