Thoughts/Advice on this you red Stag please

Hi,

Just looking for some feedback on a young stag that's antler didn't look right from a 300/400 yard range. I moved to a closer position where I decided to take the deer thinking it would be a decent cull beast.

As I've never seen a strange antler formation like this I thought I'd ask for some input.

Hard to tell from the picture, but they look broken rather than deformed.

I`ve seen similar antler formation before or lack of it you could say. Just one of those things but an ideal stag to cull none the less.

Have seen similar in Roe bucks caused by hard frost when they were still in velvet ,but don't think that is the case here
unlikely to be frost hard enough to cause that sort of damage when stags would be in velvet.

So a pointless answer , I really don't know.

how young a stag? last years calf? what kind of condition was he is?

i think it was just a very poorly fed beast who never really got going, good cull beast none the less

Looking at the discolouration on the left antler, getting darker towards the top, I'd suggest that might be evidence of bleeding at some stage during early velvet. I'd suggest he'd had some pretty significant mechanical damage back in the summer, but I'll guess we'll never know.

This young stag looked a bit on the big side for last years calf, possibly 2 years old and the coat was in a decent condition.

Wow that is a strange head on that beast, doesn't look in great health at all! Good to see it taken of the hill though I'm sure....

I reckon that staggie of yours Aligillies is only a young one. In his second year 26-28 month old.
I shot one with similar antler growth only a few weeks ago.

Looks like a hybrid Red /Sika.

Its impossible for a Roe to cross with a Red. Two different genus and the size as well.

Yes Sheamus this beast was certainly in its second year so wouldn't expect much antler growth but the single antler that was trying to grow looked more like a straight bit of stick rather than an antler, was very soft towards the end with what was described by Novice as signs of bleeding.
