Thoughts on a Shorty 308

My Sako 75 is 18” and seems to be just fine, I am pushing a 165gr sst at around 2550fps and it is a really mild load, any faster and the bullet seems to make a bit of a mess.
I’m considering chopping it down again for no real reason bar the fact it’s easier to get through some of the tight trees and brash that I stalk through and I only lost 25fps per inch so not a massive loss.
As a reloaded you can mitigate some of the loss of velocity or change the bullet itself but really for most stalking distances in this country I find that the loss of velocity is comes second to the gained ability to easily carry and operate the rifle in the area that you stalk.

Sorry to hijack but how are those with shorter finding copper is using it

Considering moving to copper soon on a 20" 1in10 tikka and be good hear first hand

Will trawl the bisley later for precious threads

To the OP keep things simple. Factory T3X and then buy a PSE stock. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed just ask @75 who has this setup.
Yep, simple and very effective. It certainly feels short and pointy to me. I posted a pic on here somewhere but can't find it so I'll try and link to it in a min.

130TTSX and N135 out of a 20" Tikka running around 2950fps has been very effective on reds.

Short barrelled 308 is more than capable of putting deer, & boar down, and accuracy is not an issue.

Remington 308 SPS, bedded into a McMillan stock. The barrel has been shortened to 16", Jewel or Timney trigger (can't remember) rifle work done by Callum Ferguson of PRS rifles.

Sierra Pro Hunter 150gn, N540, 2700fps.

Hi,

I use 18" Bergara Extreme Hunter in .308 for woodland/vineyard stalking around my place. Never had any problems with it taking down roes and fallows. Effect on smaller pigs (up to 60kg) is good too. I have no experience hunting red stags or bigger boar, but for medium size game the shorter .308 should not be a problem at all.

What is strange that the rifle really likes heavier bullets fe. 180grs Hornady International Custom (classic interlock bullet) work great. I am arround MOA on paper (100m range) and the effect on roe/fallow is deadly. Also the slower and heavier bullet does not damage venison. Of course there is 8-10cm wide exit wound but it leaves no or minimal hematoma.
