Thoughts on the new Sauer 505?

I have to add the trigger was extremely good and easily adjustable in less than a minute with a 4mm Allan key.
A nice feature. The 202 trigger was also easily adjustable. You just had to reach up into the magazine well with a small straight bladed screwdriver. But it didn’t have the 4 distinct detents that the 505 has. I wish that they had made the wood furniture and the barrels and bolts backward compatible with the 202. It’s very difficult to find spare barrels here in the states.

The bolts were heavily lubed on all the rifles bar AI. You wouldn’t want that thick line out in the field. It would be a dust and dirt trap.

I liked the 505 however it’s was very heavy and if you want to change between calibre groups say .223 and .308 it’s a whole bolt change and €700 plus the cost of the barrel and magazine.

The syncro XT carbon is £6500 and still weighs 3.3kg
I'm not interested in carbon mate. The standard synchro XT is where my money would go.

Handled one at Cluny.

Seemed like a nice bit of kit. Cheaper than 404 somehow, not being really interested I didn't ask numbers.

In Europe I was quoted the following prices if of interest - 505 is cheaper but you have to add plenty of add-ons to make it comparable to the base 404:
  • Quoted for 7 Rem Mag which as a magnum entails a €400 surcharge which is included in the different stock options below
  • Sauer 505 Synchro XT (polymer + thumbhole): €4,079
  • Sauer 505 Synchro XTC (carbon + thumbhole): €6,669
  • Sauer 505 ErgoLux (walnut grade 4): €4,529
  • Sauer 505 ErgoLux (walnut grade 5): €5,038.
  • Jewelled bolt: €130
  • DLC coating: €210g
  • Blaser scope mount: €400
  • Metal trigger guard: €90
  • Fluted barrel: €500
  • Barrels come threaded and with a 17mm contour. Standard magnum length 24", 22" optional
  • If ordered today delivery estimate is Sept/Oct
  • other info: the cocking button is metallic, but the red part is plastic. The trigger guard is plastic but can purchased in metal. Magazines are plastic but can also be purchased with a metallic plate for an extra cost.
hope this helps

Handled the 505 the other day. Rubbish.

Bolt isn’t even that smooth. Plastic stock is so flimsy it’s painful to watch it touch the barrel with any slight pressure. The barrel change is faff but I guess good if you actually do it, the screws look like they will wear.

Trigger guard and such feels cheap, not a real solid steel feel. Lack of LOP options. Trigger is awful!!! Absolutely dead to the feel although better than an old BSA CF. No way of adjusting for over travel.

The safety is so hard to undo it actually hurts your thumb.

Magazine sticks out, no double stack option.

Sauer completely failed to deliver IMHO

Recently I was at a show, and was positively impressed. Thinking about a 30/06 and spare 223 barrel. Any actual field experience from members?

I’ve actually decided to go the custom way for a tiny bit more than the base 505 carbon package in France and am very happy. Proof Research barrel, Lone Peak action, TriggerTech Diamond trigger, PSE carbon stock, F&D mod and Spartan bipod. Haven’t look back since!
