Question for highlander. Do you know if Ivomectin is the trade name for the MSD(merck sharpe and dohme) drug abamectic used to kill ticks etc?

You're sort of right but:

Ivermectin is one compound in the avermectin group (the other being doramectin, trade = dectomax). Trade names include Ivomec which is marketed by Merial that used to be MSD.

The abermectins are part of a larger group of wormers, the macrocyclic lactones. They have little if any activity against ticks (and are lethal to collies as a previous post stated).

Hope this helps. Agree with Apache re ticks, Advantix v good (this from the Search and Rescue dogs, who cover similar ground) always have my doubts about Bob Martin's stuff.

Ivermectin is the drug name. It belongs to a family of wormers called the avermectins (group 3, clear - if you like your sheep drenches!). Abamectic is in the same family.

Common trade names of ivermectin include Ivermec, Noromectin.

There are no licensed ivermectin products in dogs (mainly due to the toxic effects in certain breeds related to the MDR1 gene, such as collie dogs). Stronghold's (selamectin) is in the same family, but safe in collies. Milbemax contains, amongst othere, milbemycin that is also same family.

I remember the furore of this material being used in salmon farms to prevent sea lice and causing devastation to the sea bed life underneath the nets.

Myself I have no faith in the Bob Martin products as I've seen many animals with them and fleas or ticks. The other common presentation is people putting the dog preparation on cats and poisoning them.

There is very little supporting evidence for any resistance to Fipronil (the active ingredient in Frontline). You will see ticks and fleas on treated dogs but they die quickly. The manufacturer of Frontline guarantees that if used monthly 100% kill of ticks within 48 hours (it takes a minimum of 3 days to transmit Lyme Disease).

If you are worried about ticks then by far the best value product is a Scalibor collar. They come in 2 sizes and protect the dog for 6 months. It's a properly licensed product with evidence behind it, unlike many of these over the counter products.

Advantix is fine but smells nasty and costs you more.

And is there any coinsidence with handeling crovect and the haneller immune from ticks for a short period? I ask as IM a serious magnet for ticks and when I clipped and dosed sheep(did it once to help father in law) I didnt seem to get 1 tick for some time.Some of our local crofters and farmers positively glow after weeks of clipping and doesing and never seem to get ticks like the local stalkers do on the same ground.

Yes Crovect will have a repellent effect on ticks, but you should be wearing appropriate protective clothing so you don't get a dose.

You can get specially treated trousers for humans AFAIK

Haha,Ill pass that on to the boys!! After what I encountered wandering around woods last night,Im going to ware all my outdoor gear when I go doseing again.

Have any of you tryed advocate it's ment to be good for ticks fleas also does worms tape,and
different types of worms in dogs.And you can only get it at the vets.

I find none of the treatments work that well, i check my dogs over every day possibly three times a day.I do it while i'm sitting watching for deer to move.

I use the next product up from frontline. It is also a wormer, Stronghold from Bayer.
