Hi all,
i have a tikka 595 in .243 which i love! its a superb gun.
what would the approximate price be for a re barrel? mine only has a 18.5" barrel so was thinking of maybe a 24" with a 1:8 twist?

No? I though changing a barrel was a specialist job so was just asking what the approx price would be from anyone who’s had it done, and where from

I'd say there's lots of factors that would make a difference to the price...
Please be careful who you use, do your homework. I had a 7mm08 that took from Nov till the middle of the following year to get back from one guy then had another done by someone else which was 200quid dearer but was back in my cabinet in 14 days. Cheapest isn't always best.
Regards
Jimmy

Depends on the barrel. Like all guns, there are cheap options and expensive ones. Something like a Krieger or shilen will probably be into 4 figures. More if you want open sights. Best to pick a reputable gunsmith and see what options he can offer.

I know Steve Kershaw is around £700 with a Lothar Walther but stuff like custom reamers/headspace gauges add to that of course. He does great work and he does it fast, top bloke to deal with. Worth a call for sure.

If the rifle shoots why the need to re-barrel?

If the rifle is performing in its current role I wouldn’t change a thing. If you have identified that you want to branch out into different directions Like varminting or target shooting, I would look for a cheap donor Tikka T3. They can use AICS 5 and 10 shot magazines, have the ability to take long OEL rounds and have more aftermarket accessories.

Your round choice is good. Don’t chase speed and you can expect a couple of thousand round barrel life.

Then if you don’t like it you can sell on pretty quickly as the T3 has a good following. If you love it sell the 595 and if it takes your fancy keep both.

If you're intent on a rebarrel,I used Alan Maughan, although he's in the opposite end of the country to you. He recommends Sassen barrels(British made)and for a stainless barrel, fluting extra,it was around £750 inc proofing.
Best thing to do is call and have a chat. Ever considered rebarrelling to 6mmbr? :)

ring around some places get some prices and go from there.
1 in 8 twist so you want to fire heavier bullets. are you going to be using it as a long range varmint rifle wirh some deer stalking. etc. good gunsmith will put you right on barrel length
twist and what sort of barrel you want ie. sporter weight. light varmint or heavy varmint

depending on what sort of shooting you want to do with it.

I have had lots of work done by Mike Norris of Brock & Norris his work has always been done within the time frame he has stated and the price was very reasonable .I think the last barrel job on a Rem700 .223 was about £800 and the thing is unreal it shoots as good as my 2 other full custom rifles.

Thank you very much for the replies, I don’t think it needs a barrel just yet but as it’s only 18.5 inches I am having to load my rounds got to stay deer legal thus shortening the barrel life, I think 1/8 would be nice as I can shoot the heavier rounds

The 24 inch 1 in 9 Bartlein on my 243 shoots the 105 grain Geco ammunition so well (consistently sub half inch) that I see no point in reloading for the heavier bullets. It shoots 70 and 75 grain reloads even better. I don’t think there’s any point going as fast as an 8 twist.

Just had a 24" Shilen put on my 85 buy Neil Mcillop around £850, excellent job, really nice bloke, took 3 weeks with proofing, cheers
