To secure or not?

I've been appointed an FEO but as yet they've not been in contact to arrange the visit.
I have a cabinet here but have not secured it to the wall in case i am unsuccessful.
Should i chance it and go ahead and bolt it to the wall or not?

If he visits you do not at the time of the visit have a secure place of storage he would then have to visit again very time wasting for the FEO. The usually pull a bit on the cabinet to see if it is fixed well. Just send an email to FEO stating the make etc and ask the question.

FWIW i take the opposite view, if you do not have a secure facility to store weapons, SGC or FAC and have not been granted the same, why would you buy and install the security, when you may be refused?

As it goes i have had a SGC for 40 odd years and when i applied for FAC knew i would have to make some changes. Discussed the plans in respect of the location, the nature of the storage and how i would secure it with the FLO when he visited and he agreed them, and my FAC granted.

It seems to me to be unreasonable for an FLO to insist on security being installed unless they are already prepared to grant the issue of the SGC/FAC.

In terms of security, follow the Home Office guidelines on Firearms security.

On the basis of those make a plan on where and how to fit the cabinet to the fabric of your house.

You want somewhere that is not visible to casual visitors or from outside. It needs to be accessible.

It also needs to be somewhere that is warm and not subject to lots of changes in temperature as this just gives rise to condensation resulting in corrosion. Fitting it to an outside damp wall may not be a good idea.

Fit before or after a police visit?. I would ask the FEO. But I would have your plan in hand - this is what I am going to do - any thoughts?

The law requires that guns are kept secure and not accessible by others. The real concern is that other members of the household and a gun being picked up in the middle of a domestic argument especially after a few drams have been had, or curious children showing off to their friends.

It is a FAC not a Weapon Certificate to the point you won't find on your FAC any mention of weapon, in the guidance note yes but not on your FAC. 🙄
There is a guide for cabernet location much the same as in a vehicle with one part "out of sight to the general public"
Far too much dithering these days, Churchill said "Action this Day"

Do you have written permission for land to shoot on? Yes/no?
Do you have experience of shooting? Yes/no.
If no, do you have written letters from pro stalkers to take you out? Yes/no
Do you have a mentor or have you done or intend to do DSC1. Yes/no.
Were you a dick in the past? Yes/no?
If yes, do you have good answers for how you are a good boy now and have seen the light?
Have you informed them of any traffic violations or altercations, (ie, were you a dick in the past) They are on your record. If you can’t remember, tell then that you can’t remember, but that you have some.

They are just looking to see that you are an honest and trustworthy person. Then, it is easier to get a license.

hi, cheers for the reply. my application is for the grant of a shotgun for now.
I've been honest in my application about everything 🤞

Fix it to a wall securely and be positive, if there is no reason to knock back your app limit will be granted. In the event it is going to be granted the fixing at the time of the visit will save you time as they will have to revisit, cup half full 👍👍👍

I was on the fence similarly to yourself in the end I fitted it. Inspection came about and a request was made to move it slightly to prevent a potential pry opportunity. Subsequent adjustment was validated with images so worked out great. I’d avoid having to have a second visit where possible.

Just read home office guidance. If possible fix in corner . 4 bolts though the back and if possible coach screws through base into floor boards. I have always used Rawl bolts or alike. Chem fix is easy .
Some forces have different specs on sizes of bolts so might be worth asking if that's the case.
Just fix it and await your visit.
D

I rear mounted and drilled through the side of the safe and side mounted too. Didnt want to touch the flooring. It passed 👍🏽

Ive had a few different approaches - one FEO was happy - the next literally pulled the safe off a brick wall despite 4 rawl bolts and chem fix - nearly pulled a supporting wall down with it - she made her point - scary lady. She also insisted I used trigger guard padlocks on all the guns which are, I believe, unnecessary, but did give some additional comfort + are useful when travelling anywhere. Anyway - now happily in a different house with the safe fixed at the base, back and l/h wall, chem fixed bolts - and a happy FEO (+ house still standing)

cheers for your replies guys, few mixed answers, the FEO is off work until the 24th 🙈 but i've asked him to get in touch when he's back on duty, i've got the bolts there so will speak to him n take it from there.
Thanks once again 👍
