Tracing a shotgun

Is it possible to trace ownership of a shotgun?

I sold one roughly 5-7 years back and would really like to find the owner to potentially discuss buying it back.

Thanks

Mark

I know there is no central database.
There is, of course, a database.

National firearms licensing management system Information about legally held firearms is held on this system, and includes: data on persons holding a shotgun – name, address, date of birth, certificate number, conditions of licence, serial numbers section 1 firearm – the same details as above and also ammunition.

It is not accessible for the OP's reason.

You will have a record of to whom you sold it?

That would be my first port of call.

If they have moved it on, they will have a record of to whom they sold it.

I would not ask for any 3rd party details (and the party to whom you sold it, should not give them out) but you could ask for your details to be passed on.

If someone showed up on my door asking to buy a shotgun I'd purchased from a different party I'd be pi&&ed off. ~Muir.
More a case of someone sending a polite message asking if you might sell, or give first refusal in future. Because they shouldn’t directly pass on your details if you were not the first recipient of said gun.

You could choose to ignore said note if you wished and that would (should) be the end of the matter.

Nobody should just turn up asking, that’s bad manners.

"Showing up at the door" is a figure of speech. Knock or Note: Either way it's an intrusion of my privacy. JMHO. ~Muir

As you are entitled.
I might feel that way, or I might even consider the approach. Depending on what mood I was in.
After today’s people going back on their word, that cocked my day up. I probably wouldn’t be very charitable. On another day who knows.

Why would you think you have a right to privacy ?
If an official record exists, and it will in this case, you can have no real expectations of privacy.

Neil.

That statement grated across my brain. In the UK can one go to a firearms official and ask who owns what firearms? Are such records public?? Maybe it's a cultural thing. What other aspects of one's personal life are strangers allowed to be privy to?? ~Muir

No.

All FAC/SGC holders details are held on the Police National Computer (and have been for some years).

The PNC also holds all criminal records (its primary function). There was a much fuss, made by some, that all FAC/SGC holders were being "criminalised" when they were added to this database.

The PNC is not available to the general public.

Misuse of the PNC is a serious offence and those that misuse it will (ironically) find they have there own entry on it, and all the associated joys that come with a criminal record.

I posted a general enquiry on the SD some years ago about a particular rifle that I once owned and regretted selling. I was fortunate in that the current owner of the rifle who has owned it pretty much since I sold it is also a site member and made contact so I now know where my old rifle is.
Is the shotgun you seek to reacquire unique enough that it may be recognised by a site member who could at least point you in the right direction?

Likewise here. ~Muir
