Tree damage ??

A friend of mine has a small plantation of unusual trees, which are slowly being damaged over the last few months by Deer or Badgers ?. Anyway the other night I went there and stalked about with my thermal hoping to see the culprit. All I saw was a young fallow but would a fallow deer do this sort of damage ? I half expected to see a young Roe buck, any ideas ? IMG-20240623-WA0005.webpIMG-20240623-WA0006.webp

Fallow certainly would do that. You can see the tooth marks in the 2nd pic where they've scraped.
Wouldn't usually expect to see bark stripping at this time of year though, but other people might know different.
Usually associated with low nutrition (eg, winter), dietary deficiency (lack of minerals) or stress.

Could be Fallow if you ain't got Sika, but over the last few months may not be as bigger bucks would be cast in April. Roe possibly, fraying and bark eating though the latter is rare in Roe.
