Tree stumps

Ok folks
Hope everyone is well ?
Well I finally got rid of hedge in my garden ....or more accurately 40 odd year old Lelanydi ( spelling) type trees that were topped and tailed ....right next to a wall .....the trunks have been cut very close to the ground ....I'm not planning at moment to dig out the roots / stumps ....major job....

Any treatments or like I need to do on the stumps?
I know nowt about trees , but had folk telling me I need to put in copper nails ...others saying drill holes and pour " something" in there .

Or do I just leave em ?

Any advice
Great
H appreciated from those more in the know than me

Cheers
Paul

Leylandii not likely to sprout from stump so leave it. Mate of mine uses N140 to shift them that works!!!

Hire a stump grinder in - might not be that expensive. As has been said leylandii won't grow from a stump

Leylandii will not grow back so don't waste your money on stump treatments. The treatments only stop regrowth, they don't help the stump to rot down. Save your money.

A stump grinder will remove the stumps :-)

If you mean summit like an outboard but with a downward v blade I've seen big one on you tube !
Looked the ticket but no idea if get small ones that work close to a wall

two options,
bore holes and fill with potassium nitrate and then add hot water. will just rot away after that ... or let the saltpeter soak into the wood it rot a bit and dry out then set a fire in it it will burn (smoulder) for a couple of days....

both work I tried them. theres other options I have yet to try but I had a kg of potassium nitrate handy and gave it a go a few years ago. youtube is full of nifty tricks for stump removal

I think he wanted to keep the wall.

They rot reasonably quickly if damp. I''d pile some earth on top and ignore them if you don't want to get a grinder in.

Bore a hole downwards in the top as wide as you can then a couple of narrow holes as low down in the side to connect the main one. Light a fire in the centre, air will be drawn in from the side holes and it will burn away (keep adding fuel like a camp fire).
Or easy option leave alone, 8" diameter stump will rot down in next 10-15 years.

The tree man three doors down...a benefit of living in a village...used this grinder thing on my four trees. A holly, a leylandi, an alder and a budlea.

You couldn't tell they'd been there after he'd gone. Save for a few wood chips.

Next door at my son's house there's s stump still there since ten years still not rotted down.

Will make the soil unsuitable for most planting if all the chips get left in there mind. Bound to be a local company who can quote

Well I'm not digging them out ......I've removed 45 metres of it , it was 7ft high and 6ft wide but only the outside 18"-20" were green , if I'd cut back level to my boundary wall it would have just been sticks ....never would have grown back .....also I feared roots going into wall or under it so for easiness it's out !
The main boughs or trunks were up to 6" ish , couple bigger but there was a main bough at least every 5' So I have a few stumps along the wall!
I'm keeping the wall , I'd like the stumps not dig out but at
Least ground level or just below .
Too many to leave burning ,.....will have a think

Actually usually the easiest way (and it sounds too late for it) is to leave stumps long and either get a mini digger in so it has a bit of leverage to go at, generally leyandi aren't massive roots.
There not actually that bad to dig out by hand either, esp if u leave stem 4+ft long u can get a rope on the top and winch/pull with motor couple that with a 'chopping pinch' (i welded a 4" brick bolster onto a pinch bar) amazing wot it will chop throu esp after a buff with the grinder

Never used the stump grinders, althou have heard the smaller ones u can hire are not great, ur sometimes better trying to find a pro with a self propelled 1, esp if u have a load of them.
Have a look at local tree surgeons adverts see if any advertise it.

Ur other option is just dig round them the best u can clearing debris/soil/stones and get at it with a chainsaw. JUST BE CAREFUL, clould be a high chance of kick back etc
Might even be worth buying a smaller bar/chain 13"(if u have a decent long bar) as it will riun chains and shorter bars are cheaper but also handier and safer for a jobs like that

Don't use a chainsaw there are too many. If your chain touches soil you will take sharpness off the chain instantly. Will cost a fortune in chains.
Best tool is a mattock (it's like a pick but with a broad sideways axe type head. The side roots will not be of any substantial thickness and you should be able to get at the centre tap root easy enough.
I did a dozen for my dad a few years ago it took me a day and was a good workout. From your original post I thought they were much thicker

Yeah
Too late for close ... roots close or under wall maybe, don't want to upset that,
Chainsaw I have is a small Sthill with 14" I think m181 or something ... have the trousers & lid / visor etc ..
Maybe an option to excavate around it bit & cut lower ...
I'll have a ponder, no hurry

Cheers guys 👍

Don't bother mucking about with a chainsaw - you'll wreck the chain in no time. I ripped some out with a mini digger the other week and it made a hell of a mess. Far cheaper hiring in a stump grinder and operator

Had forty removed about 5 years ago and left the stumps in the ground, smaller ones have rotted well but the larger ones are still hard with no real signs of rotting.
Another dozen still to remove, unfortunately no good for firewood.

As someone mentioned - leylandii are actually quite easy to get out by hand with garden tools. Roots are shallow and quite fragile. So dig around the trunk, expose the major lateral roots, hack them through with an axe or pick (don't have to go all the way - half way is often enough). Then a big pry bar and some bricks for leverage.

Once I'd worked out the technique, I could do two or three an hour, and quite enjoyed it. Advantage is that you can identify danger roots going out under walls or the road, and cut the off completely.
