Oh dear. I find it very sad that this thread has, in part at least, morphed into a verbal slanging when the OP, for all its faults, asked a rather good question. Back in the day when people actually wrote to each other the common advice was to read your letter at least twice before posting it, to ensure that it was polite and conveyed your intent fully. Nowadays communication is so different, instantaneous “letters” aka “posts/msgs” etc are often typed on phones with two thumbs, or in my case three, and immediately sent without any reading over. That and the cursed “predictive” ogre often means a quite different output or indeed outcome! From my own experiences with one of my beloved grandsons I am also aware that Dyslexia et al can be a major factor in both grammar and composition errors.
Sooo, maybe just a little more tolerance/understanding and resisting the temptation for a “knee -jerk“ response will benefit us all?

Out of interest why would a bullet containing lead leave lead in the bore?

The jacket contains the lead until it impacts the target so it never touches the bore, even an exposed lead tip won’t leave residue.

Its surprising how many people are now correctly diagnosed with dyslexia, it comes in many many forms, in early school days you were put to the back of the class due to the (apparently educated) teachers at the time thinking you were thick.

It wont affect the ability to shoot though, indecently there are about 1 in 20 of you that could have some form of dyslexia.

Maybe we should have some disability type flag on our log in details ???


Anyway, i tried some RWS HIT in my 30.06 and it grouped the same as my other choice of lead bullets.

Very interesting practical test of factory ammunition

Also interesting that one with a 308 was using heavier bullets and saw excellent terminal performance

There was significant damage with a frangible non lead round (carcass shown) - not sure why anyone would choose such for deer work

However the consensus of view from all was that factory non lead works perfectly well

Totally agree JB and I know all about dyslexia. There is a difference though between that and good old fashioned unadulterated bone idleness. That’s what irritates me not the former ofcourse.

If you can do that you must have gills. Over here gills are used as the basis for a spirits measurement - significantly larger (50%?) than in Englandville. I know which one I prefer! Slante!

I watched this video earlier as was impressed / relieved that someone had taken the time to show conclusively if non lead was truly effective across a large range of brands, calibers and weights.

Average run distance of 18 yards, with deer shot between 25 m and 270 m. Feedback from everyone who participated basically say it's as effective as lead and they saw no issues at all with what they used. When asked to sum up their impressions, the deerstalkers just say non toxic "just works", rather a boring but conclusive end to the debate to if non-toxic rifle ammunition works.

In over 350 deer, only one deer was notable in being "lost", although it was caught up with they day after. Although not ideal, someone who wants to cling to this one freak incident out of 350 deer as an argument that non toxic alternatives are inhumane vs lead is being pedantic.

I'm just hoping now that factory non toxic ammunition becomes more readily available locally. I also hope that people will move with the times, change is not always bad.

Thoroughly recomend anyone to watch the video.

Sadly they haven't provided any information on what damage was done on munties which I shoot more of than anything. I suspect that most of their culls were fallow and roe.

I’m guessing statistics is not your strong point? They can be made to show pretty much what you want.

average (assume mean) distance run 18 metres, sample of 348 of those 348; 230 were head or neck shot 118 body shot.

If a deer is successfully head or neck shot it destroys the CNS it drops on the spot. So 2/3rds if the sample ran ZERO yards and the body shot with new ran an average of 53 yards... Still not bad but the video glosses over this. Also if the majority of the deer were shot close in (like all the animals shot in the video) that average doesn’t really mean a whole lot.

Far, far more useful would be the average distance run verses distance of shot for body shot animals only would be more useful.

Even more useful would be a decent sample of animals body shot at 150 - 300 yards verses the same with cup and core bullets, using say 3 or 4 of the same chamberings .243, a 6.5 or 7 mm and a 30.

Also you should not take anything posted by field sports channel as independent, I would imagine they all get plenty of freebies - do they ever do a bad review of kit??

No need to be like that, I'd argue I'm quite good at statistics, but I take your point regarding statistics being able to be manipulated. I hope they release a report on the data they've collated so it can be delved into a bit more.

It would've be ideal to have a control group of lead ammunition to prove it against, but I do think that the effort they've gone to is very impressive.

I think the main take away from the video is everybody involved seemed very convinced that non toxic was effective, and they did not see swapping to non toxic as a detrement to their profession.

Ref FSC kit review - I take your point, but in this example they were pitting competitors against eachother so the situation is different. They did a review of non toxic shotgun catridges a while back and they moaned about one particular catridge kicking like a mule, so not always positive.
