Trimmed some 22's...

I have modified many .22 in the last 40 years. All killed well but the cost was accuracy. The modified round never shot was well and rounds bought for s specific configuration. I suspected disturbance of the crimp more than any error in workmanship-Muir

The “best” as in most lethal .22 LR ammo is HV hollow point for small stuff and the old “Super X Dyna point” for just about everything else that you would sensibly launch a .22 LR at. The HV solids also have their place.
Dont ask me how I know this.
In the UK, you tend to be very noise conscious, so you tend to steer clear of the HV fodder, thats unfortunate, because the HV stuff is actually far more effective on game, thats why HV hollow points are so popular with game shooters everywhere else.
SD appears to be trying to compensate for the inherent lack of energy and lethality of Sub sonic/Target ammo by modifying the bullet shape. Depending on circumstances, that may not be a bad solution. Compared to HV ammo, sub sonics and standard velocity rounds are quiet, with or without a moderator, they just dont have the same energy.
I have blown rats and rabbits in half with the hyper velocity hollow points and have given up shooting rabbits with anything other than target ammo because of the damage. Target ammo is all I use now ( unless I was specifically targeting sheep or goats), its not perfect, but it works.
I’d love to test those modified rounds head-to-head against their un modified siblings for accuracy and trajectory out to around 100M.
Not criticising, just curious.

Ok I'm interested, more details on this round please
Just a jackets 357 bullet reversed. Excellent small game load.
I used alliant herco and I think it was about 5gn.
Here is a reversed bullet in my 3030 at subsonic levels, it's more lethal like so.

I used to subscribe to the Varmint Hunter magazine…unfortunately now discontinued,it was a great read
There was an article in it,if I can find the magazines, that ran over 2 editions that covered modifying .22 rounds
There were dies that squared off the rounds, turned solids into hollow points or trunchicated them
Tests done for accuracy and deformation/terminal performance in soap blocks
In just about all cases performance improved over the original rounds

Sadly, G&A now turned into a comic.
KB.
I know Ken.
Many years ago I got given a box of old ones by a gunsmith, long gone now, Steve Jones of Trent Firearms. I enjoyed them immensely. Clearly from a different time than this **** show world of today!

@dunwater
CCI use to make a 22 lr called the SGB. For small game bullet.

It is rumoured it may be coming back. Hope so.
Thanks, that’s very similar to the profile of the Eley and Lapua target ammo I use, mostly for rabbits.
I have no other rimfire quarry available, mostly of my small bore ammo is fired at paper so it’s easier to use what I’m used to on game than to switch.
There’s a very noticeable shift in impact once you move to HV jacketed rounds and you may need to clean the barrel and foul it again before your next outing on the range with the target stuff or groups fall off.
I never used to worry about this nonsense when I was putting hundreds of rounds a month down range at rats and rabbits, but it does affect your score when score matters.
