Will only be using .22/250 or .243
Hi 76thirty, I do not shoot off the roof, but I do shoot off the wing mirror. I have made a rest out of 19mm ply that goes over the window ledge of my car. I put a towel under it to protect paintwork, and have a towel stapled to the top of it to protect the gun. It works extremely well as you can stabilise your elbow and be rock solid on the shot. It took half an hour to make and cost nothing.
I’ve shot 9.3x62 off the bonnet many times
No problems that I’m aware of

I had to put a towel on the dash in the end.

I’m bad enough with the brno, have yet to use the 10/22 at night, but I’ve got 1 cup holder full of all the brass I’ve found the last few weeks and I know there’s plenty I still haven’t found

Take a towel.
I find it in the seat rails, under the carpet, everywhere.
An old farmer once drove me around in his Merc 4x4 shooting rabbits out of the window. I shot 70 plus , the spent .22 cases were all over his vehicle. The police paid him a visit after the local garage reported it , he had to explain the scenario

My pickup is fairly awash with spent 270 brass. Generally a few roll out the door every time I open it.

Just remember to put it back down before entering the M4/5/25 ETC.

If you have a driver, there are other issues. Acceleration, braking, pitching on slopes and pot hols. Securing the bag or rest. Putting stuff down unsecured like mags or lights etc. Grips to hold onto especially pitching and cornering.
We used seats when we pulled up to spot or call stuff in. But its just another layer of potential hazard. Plus. You get bloody wet and/or cold.
I thought about a 360°bench with a rotary stool so 180° arc potentially. Similar issues arise of course

Even with it down, beware of low barriers, multi-story carparks, etc.

I have been shooting off the roof of two Vitaras for over a decade. Side opening back door helps. Old Vitara best as flat over rear bumper. Grand Vitara recessed to give spare clearance and not so deep but ok. Used to shoot off bipod on roof but now have board across roof attached to roof bars. Use bench rest bipod and rear bag as necessary. Board is actually a bit of plastic facia board. Sprayed with matt NATO green. Very stable shooting position and round going down. Use extensively when shooting foxs on cut grass and stubbles.
