Truck rooftop shooting

I use the heavy duty foam in 1inch layers about 5 deep, then on the bottom layer roll mat foam and cut out the correct size holes for magnets to fit in, tape it all up and pop on the roof..... about 16inches long by 5 inches deep and stays on at 70mph. Won't win any awards for pretty but got me the shot many times.

I think I'm going to steal your idea... I love a simple solution :)

I had one of these N and J Aluminium foxing canopies on my previous pickup.
Very effective.
Its amazing how much more you see over the hedges with that little bit of extra height.
I went to them for my top, twice as big opening and had it opening forward over the cab, just make sure the aerial is pushed out of the way, rubber flooring fixed to the underneath or base of the opening, a hydraulic bar stool in the back couldn't be better. A brilliant company to have done the work. 👍

This clever little gizmo might be of interest, it’s intended to fix a camera +lens to the edge of a car window.
I’ve used it for all sorts cameras, spotter, rimfire, lamp etc. Should get one on the bay.

I once worked for a boss and we went rabbiting in his Range rover with tan leather seats. I used to stand on the front seat and shoot out of the opened sunshine roof. He used to drive to dead rabbits, lean out, pick them up and fling them over the back seat into the rear. He had no respect for vehicles and the seats used to be covered in blood and mud. I used to shoot off a foam pillow up to 60 or so rabbits an evening. His man used to clean the vehicle.

38 year old ex military Landrover 90. Two careful owners - Me and the Royal Marines. Lift off hatch cut into the roof giving me room to stand or sit on an adjustable height seat which revolves through 360 degrees. Shooting rack is a cut down Landrover safari roof rack. (That is the type that has a ladder at the back so you can pitch your tent on the top of the vehicle to avoid the snakes and big toothed nasties). It would normaly cover the whole of the roof. Truck is fitted with internal curtains fore and aft so that I, and my dog, can move around inside without being observed. Obviously fitted with racks for flasks and other goodies. Provided the ground is not too wet, which would cut up the earth, my mobile highseat can be put wherever I want it. Photo's were taken on the morning after I had suffered a small navigation failure and put the front right wheel into the space over a wide and deep ditch. No damage except my ego. I have had her for eighteen years and she is still going strong. It is also fitted with intercom system for driver to gunner conversations.

Looks good.. I'm pleased I'm not the only one with experiance of ending up in a ditch at night foxing.. our's was an old Series 3 truck, catapulted me and the lamper clean over the cab 🤣🤣

On the night that I ditched mine there was just me and my lab in the truck. When the truck went down Merlyn came over my left shoulder, slid down my lap and jammed my right foot down hard on the accelerator. I had to switch the ignition off at full revs to stop the noise. It then took me twenty minutes to get her and me plus rifle out of the truck. It took about ten minutes to do the recovery the following morning.

Great fun.. it's difficult to get in & out of a Landy at the best of times I find... May I ask if you got the fox?🤣🤣 ..
When it happened to us we were trying to manoeuver down the field to get behind a fox for a safe shot on the edge of a village, everyone including the driver was looking at the fox in the red light and we never realised how far down the field we had driven... the funniest bit was Wiggy the driver poked his head out of the window and said to the light operator "Keep the light on the bloody fox then man" Wiggy had blood running down his nose after headbutting the steering wheel, us three in the back ended up in the middle of the road... we ended up the talk of the village next morning, couldn't pull it out with the Isuzu so had to borrow a tractor, broke the chassis on the Landy 🙄

I was lucky. (Only damage was to crack the plastic number plate). We pulled it out with the farm cherry picker. I thought that would tear the exhaust pipe off but all was well. It
occured due to no recce during daylight! There is a long and deep ditch seperating two very large fields. One 'gateway' (earth bridge) joins the fields. It was covered in long grass. Someone had driven across it during the combining process but not the combine. Probably the bosses landy. Following a fox I got my left wheel into the track left by his right wheel and launched myself into space. It was a long walk home at 2am.
