Tungsten shot as an alternative to lead?

tried it when these stupid regs came in years ago its too hard. on my flight pond i watched my syndicate shooting ducks with steel shot and tungsten
you could see in the binos that the shot was hitting the bird but zipping straight through and we were picking up injured birds fields and fields away.
bismuth was as close in performance to lead as we could get but horrendous in price.
makes me wonder about brass and copper bullets for stalking:) :old: so thanks baxc for signing up to a lead ban!

When shooting ducks a few years ago I used tungsten matrix regularly - brilliant alternative but mega expensive. re Grannysmith above - min range 40 yds the only pass-through shot I have had is with Winchester loaded in the US they were devastating - to my shoulder. Excellent for inland goose shooting.
Tungsten Matrix on special offer at William Powell only approx a quid a pop - same as lead .308 bullets were a few years ago.
just shy of £900 for a thousand.

That's bull****.

Are you sure you aren't confusing ITM with steel or Hevi-shot?

ITM is good stuff but as said above. It's exoensive

I have probably won more clay pigeon contest than you have entered and run my own shoot for 30 yrs. best if you keep your smartass comments to yourself

Fight! Fight! Fights!
You guys should have a duel 🤺 🔫

Grannysmith can use Lead
Jubnut can use Tungsten

Whoever wins was right 👍
It'll be me.

The reason he's talking out of his arse.

Tungsten, the metal is hard.
Tungsten Matrix shot though (which GS will have been using in the dark ages) wasn't solid tungsten. It's tugsten powder compressed in resin. It's soft. I have some here and I can make an indent in it with my fingernail.

Bismuth is softer.

Steel and hevi shot are harder.

Todays tungsten shot is going to be TSS, ITX etc etc. Which, granted are harder than lead but... They outperform lead hands down.

My main issue with non toxic shot is the cost, I homeload and it's still bloody expensive stuff.

If you have the budget for Hevi shot or CGR powershot, etc it is a massive improvement in terms of pattern density and downrange energy over lead. I can load a shot size smaller, increase my pellet count etc and actually achieve greater energy/penetration than I ever could with any lead loads.

There is so much total shite spouted by old duffers like Grannysmith about non-lead shot and rifle ammo for that matter from people who made their minds up about it before they had even fired a cartridge, arse ended a teal and decided that because it took a bit of a retrieve it was the shot's fault not theirs. They have stuck to that opinion for twenty odd years and still spout the same old crap.

This is all despite the fact that all of the non-lead ammo has come on in leaps and bounds.

The big wildfowling loads used to have increased antimony and/or copper plated shot to make it harder!!! Anybody remember Winchester XX 2 ounce 2's?

Even steel which, admittedly in the first years of the lead ban was lacking is a truly viable alternative to lead now.

For anyone that is reading this thread and hasn't tried any of the non-lead alternatives ffs don't listen to the total bull**** on here, get some, try it with an open mind and make your own decisions.

Leave these old farts in the dark ages where they belong.

I have to say that whilst I have used tungsten matrix extensively, in my view, at best, its not as good as lead, close but not as good and many many times more expensive so I'm with Granny on this.

There is absolutely no need for abuse and no excuse.
