Two days, three lions, three gin traps

Carl, are these traps set specifically to catch predators or just in the hope of catching anything big enough to sell/eat ?

Usually the latter, Basil. However, in this particular case, they had a specific order for lions from a witch.

Let's hope that snake doesn't get out of the bag, eh... :-|
Good on you mate, how could they use such a barbaric piece of equipment.
When I did a quick hunt around Kimberley the I asked the same question, as the other poster, the PH winked and said SSS!
Cheers
Richard

We recognised that using traps such as this to catch wild dogs in Australia is something that we have historically supported. For example, @johngryphon in Victoria.
Only just saw this mention today and I don`t know why but the miss may have been during one of my enforced holidays here.
Btw our trapping is such that traps are inspected daily, any foot chewing is very very rare and imo caused by prolonged time in the trap where the foot could thus becomes numb and any feeling gone.
Perhaps the unfortunate lions were in traps for quite some time, that I dont know.

Our scouts at the coutada have arrested all six poachers, and identified the man controlling them.
Upset to see these pictures. I won’t pretend to understand motivations to commit, what I personally see as, a barbaric reckless act. whilst some may recognise that poverty may play a part in poacher’s motivations, however that is no excuse imo. As for the man controlling them, I would suggest his own leg is placed in one of his gin traps and left for the lions to “manage ” accordingly. I’m sure his black magic would protect him of course, might send a useful message to future would be poachers. I don’t have funds too book a hunt, or gift a classic Ferrari Unfortunately, but would happily fund the diesel costs to help “feed the lions”. Utmost respect for the work you do.

Poverty isn’t the main reason but sheer laziness. Too many handouts have made them overly reliant on government help.

The deforestation by the locals is heartbreaking to clear ground to grow maize and beans at an incredibly low yield. To put it in perspective a modern 5,000 acre farming operation would produce more food than say 30,000 acres managed by the locals.

The best solution would be to encourage villagers to move to the towns and cities where the children can get an education and where healthcare can be administered more efficiently. More importantly it would remove a lot of the poaching, meat is a valuable commodity in a tetse area where livestock can’t live.

Life in the villages around the coutada is miserable with the men smoking drugs all day and the females doing the graft.

If you really want to help book a hunt the plains game rates are more than reasonable and the numbers quite incredible.

In addition to poaching illegal logging and mining are two big threats.

That lion was trapped to order

Local witch doctor wanted it for muti and potions

I was hoping to go out to Carl’s this Oct

I’ll have to wait now until next year

J

PS

I think I recognise that rock formation @Cumbrian 1

About 400m along the dry river bed to the right of camp?

You could be right we went down so many riverbeds I couldn’t be certain.

When I was in Namibia I met an old Boer farmer who’d shot 12 lions so far that year. The only argument his hunting neighbours had with his behaviour was that he wouldn’t wait until they could whistle up a client to pay for it.
The farm I was on had a shoot on sight no charge policy for 2 creatures, jackal and cheetah, they were controlled by both shooting and trapping.
Big alpha predators aren’t popular neighbours for anyone dependant on livestock of any kind for their income.
A cow a week gets really expensive.

Third lion now found and fixed up. It is my new pet, 'Tiddles' that escaped from his release boma a few weeks ago. :worried: Poor sod.

The first two will be fine, as @deerstalker.308 says, because they are part of a pride social structure. The last one is yet to hook up with any mates so I am much more worried about him. We will shoot food and leave it for him to find for the next few weeks while he gets used to being a tripod. Hopefully, he'll team up with a young female or two soon.

Usually, poachers avoid catching lions for obvious reasons. However, we snatched a few guys recently who told us that a man who keeps a snake in a bag (i.e. a witch) had told them to target them and bring them to him. The parts can be used locally in witchcraft and also sold to the far east for the usual medical b0ll0cks.

Our enquiries continue...

Hey Carl, that’s great work you and your team are doing and very brave too. Are you full time in Moz now or do you get back to Herefordshire at all. If you do PM me and I’ll take you deer stalking.

You guys are something else, I really don't feel well done is enough!!

For what it's worth.

There are a couple of guys on this forum (who have posted on this thread), that are regular visitors to Mozambique.

Their Safari's help to fund the anti-poaching efforts.

I also know that they regularly donate to the anti-poaching efforts over there - not to mention the local schools for the children.

They are too modest to say so on an internet forum, but they do 'good stuff', quietly in the background and without fuss.

Hope this helps to reassure you.

You are right. Maybe SD admin should start an annual levy on members something small say £20 a year that can be donated to support hunters like CarlW who are also engaged in really beneficial conservation efforts. How many would support his? After all we all get a lot of value and enjoyment from the posts on SD so why not we all pay a little for it. I mean all ordinary members not Trade Members or Supporters who already contribute. So an ordinary members conservation levy, who’s up for it?
