Whilst out in the rain Saturday I met a guy metal detecting. Odd as nobody had let me know there would be anyone on the estate other than the public footpaths.
So I engaged him to see what he was doing (quite obviously metal detecting) and if he had let anyone know he would be there.
He had and all seemed legitimate although nobody had let me know.
Anyway we got talking and I asked what he had found and to which he showed me coins, medal and a civil way musket ball. Naturally I was interested in the musket ball and he let me keep it saying he had quite a collection already.
Oh and I had a blank outing so it was some conciliation.
Sunday morning and I was out walking the dog in the rain on the same ground and took the lane splitting the estate in two. As I walked down the lane I noticed something lying in the middle of the road. It was a very old solid bullet. Fired and showing signs of impact to the tip.
On return home I measured it at 7.6mm so guess its a military 7.62, but where had it come from?
Now there is the Welford RAF base about a kilometre over the field. One can only guess what may have happened some years ago!
