two rifles same caliber

I supposed there have been a few threads around this topic, but I cannot find any.

My FAC is open.

I have a .308 bolt action rifle with mod for deer in the UK. It's great, I love it. I would like an unmoderated lever action BLR in .308 for wild boar here in the UK and in Europe. I would also use the .308 BLR for deer too in the UK when the conditions suited it better. Would I be allowed this on my FAC? Or is it not seen a different enough to warrant such a variation of two rifles in the same caliber? The other thing is that I shoot well with .308 and don't want to start a flinch or other with a heavier caliber in the BLR. So different golf clubs, same bang is the concept.

Any experience or ideas?

No issues at all, one set up with scope the other with open sights you have good reason, get the variation in lol

I don't see a problem with having two rifles of the same calibre. I know lots of people who have a backup rifle in the same calibre or one for hunting and one for target shooting. I myself have one .22 bolt action for target/vermin and one .22 semi auto for practical. I am happy to be proved wrong though.

Two rifles in one calibre makes sense and reduces the overall quantity of ammunition needed. For a good few years I had two .270 WCF bolts action rifles on my FAC. Pretty much for the same rationale as BACARDIGOLD.

Hi, I have 3 308's on my FAC and as long as you can (as the others have said) justify the rifles of the same caliber you should not have a problem. I have one old Rigby I use and don't like to get it wet !!!, one heavy barrel and one for general stalking with a mod etc etc.

Hope that helps

As said above. I have 3 in 6.5x55 Swedish (75 year old Swedish Mauser service rifle, heavy barrel target T3, Sako 75 stalking rifle) and 3 in .22LR, (Semi-auto target rifle, heavy barrel Finnfire Range, lightweight Finnfire hunter) they all have different design characteristics and have different uses which they are put to. Think carefully about the words on your Variation application and you should be OK.

as above I have 3x.30 cal rifles, all cleared for Deer and AOLQ all with specific reasons for owning, as long as you have a good reason then there really shouldn't be a problem.

I feel slightly inferior, I only have 2 .308's . I recently went for a new rifle and was thinking of a different calibre to the one I already had...my first .308 had been set up on NV so put in the variation stating different set up (day scope), not a question asked by FLD. In the end I just thought one calibre, one type of ammo, easier all round.

Well the .308 works so well, doesn't it? And you are likely to find it if you need some. Okay so long as I can justify the differing rifles and their particular applications, it should be okay.

One rifle with night vision and another with a day scope, both conditioned for fox/vermin and AOLQ. One moderator to fit both: No problem.
One rifle with long range target scope mainly for on the range and another with shorter barrel and moderator for in the field, both conditioned for deer and AOLQ: No problem.
4 rifles, 2 calibres. Fewer rounds to be kept!

As long as you can prove two distict reasons, no problem, eg, one set up with night gear for windy night fox work using 110grain Vmax, other for normal stalking.

I'm actually looking to do the same. I've a Sako M591 and recently purchased a Sauer 202. both in .308 cal. I intend on using both for stalking (one for the wetter days as dont want the sauer getting ruined!) what would be the best way to approach it? I cant use target shooting as a reason as im not a member of a club. Definately cannot use Foxing for either as .308 is illegal for foxing here (donno about mainland uk but it is in n.ireland) and there is no chance i could use it for NV as that is also illegal for deer stalking. If questioned what would be the best answer? Also if i did want to make one open sights - and was later found to have a scope on it, id assume i could lose the license over it?

Thanks

Why go looking for problems why don't you just say you want a second/spare rifle.

yeah was just thinking that. was just going to stick it down for deer stalking and if anyone flags it they flag it if they dont they dont.

I had called the office a few months back and they said just work away and stick it down as deer stalking.

but everyone online (Facebook) has an opinion - had some **** just ask "why would you want 2 of same calibre" i didnt wanna say "well, because i just do". so said "well maybe i could have one sighted for long range shots" i think he was trying to be smart when he replied with "what do you mean long range shots" to which i replied with https://youtu.be/GFTgkibl7DU?t=31s wasnt too happy with my response lol

I'm just gonna go ahead and stick it on and see what comes back.

I have 2 x .22 Lr on my ticket for vermin and target plus a .22 WMR for the same plus Fox.

I've also got .308 & 6.5x55 and have just yesterday applied for a second 6.5 x 55 as I want a 6.5 rifle that is more suitable for target, may argument being that the second swede will allow me to use the same reloding consumables (exc. expanding bullets) and my overall ammo holding won't need to go up. plus my 30" barrel .308 isn't ideal as a back up stalking rifle no matter how accurate it is!

I'll let you know how I get on in a few days....

Someone asked me the other day if i liked father ted...i said yes without thinking...that clip reminded me why!

Cheers Boydy - dont really care that much if i have to give up the Sako - will miss it (great shooting gun for the money) just would like to hold onto it for those horrible days you are out and its pishing with rain alllllll dayyyyyyy lol. id just use the money on the sale of it for a scope for the Sauer if i have to trade it in. But prefer to hold onto it

Why do people bother with Facebook and Twitter, opening their heart and mind to the World?
