Two sheeps....

reduced to kit form today. A pair of Ryland gimmer ewes that failed to produce last year met their end last week. Ten days hanging has done them proud. Just over 10kg from the smaller of the two, and just over 14 from the other. A promise to a friend fulfilled, and payment in kind has made this a very good day 👍

Twice this week ive.been asked if I can do a cow !

Eh...no sorry
I reckon I could just about manage a Dexter or a Shetland. In absolutely no hurry to find out though 🤣🤣

I can tell you from experience that the full enormity of what you've let yourself in for doesn't really hit home until after you've pulled the trigger..... By which time it's too late to change your mind!
I'm glad to have done a few cattle as home kills, but I have no intention of doing any more!

Nothing as nice to butcher as a well chilled lamb or wether.
Deer are a sloppy nightmare in comparison.

Much easier to clean up after doing a deer though. No fat stuck to everything.

Lamb not as bad as a full fat cover boar , doing a young male this week thats a greasy pig !

Wild boar?
I've done countless domestic pigs, but the pleasure of processing a wild one still awaits me!
Yes a wild boar , the skinning to get a neat beast is all knife work to leave the fat on beast not skin . Worth the effort for the quality meat and very hard to get on to them this season down to a mast year my opinion . Another thread not hijack this !

I’ve done 2, and you’re right.
But once it’s on the ground you have no choice.

I think I’d call it a draw. You could end up with fat on everything with an early stag or a decent hind, they still won’t take a set.

These two were fat! The amount of suet on them was pretty impressive, but they weren't so fat to have too much waste. I reckon the discard was maybe 20kg 🤔 They were set beautifully, too. Getting the shoulders off clean took a fair bit of muscle. Very nice carcasses indeed!
