UPDATE: TVP FAC/SGC Renewals

Variation to add 30-06: call from FEO to approve exactly 3 months to the day from submission. Looks like they are working to 3 months and sticking to it. I can live with that if they can be consistent.
 
The good news is that TVP appear to have their ducks in a line for progressing certificates in a timely manner.

The bad news is that they are completely ignoring current Firearms Legislation and Home Office guidance with specific reference to GP reports at renewal time...

Put simply:Current Firearms Licensing legislation and Home Office guidance requires that at FAC renewal time, all applicants' GPs are contacted to request confirmation that there are no mental health or other medical concerns affecting suitability of the applicant for a firearm. If there is, to then provide a more detailed report on these concerns, at which point in that case only, a fee may be charged.


It is acknowledged in Home Office guidance, and supported by the Countryside Alliance and BASC, that where a GP does not respond to the police within 21 days, then the applicant should not be disadvantaged, and the police should continue processing the application.


BASC states publicly that Thames Valley Police are one of the forces consistently not following HO guidance as they will not proceed without having received that initial "yes/no" response from a GP...

I know of a number of folk that have had to pay a GPs' fee just for the initial "yes/no" response to get their Renewal processed by TVP. It will be interesting to see what happens as they are all following up with BASC, CA and NRA, along with their MPs to get this escalated.
 
The trouble is they are all singing from different sheets interpreting what THEY think the guidelines say and thats whats screwing it up plus the home office are not helping any because they say its under ongoing review,in other words bogoff!! and sort it amongst yourselves.and the shooting orgs let all this happen, i know they are doing there best but it should have been sorted from day one! by them all together as one party.

Maybe this is one of those things that needs the Organisations (whichever is in the mix) to take a refusal to renew/grant, where all the necessary criteria have been met/demonstrated, to appeal and let a Court take a view.

For sure unnecessary and we should not have to, but if it moves this matter forward and is helpful thereafter..............

Al the organisations read these fora and will know what their membership wants them to do. Yet time and again they pursue a course which they say they know better than their members. You only have to vote with your feet and go to someone who will do what their members want. I dont include BASC in that list - they have consistently failed.

Personally, I'm with NRA. It's mandated for membership of BSRC and makes shooting on the ranges at Bisley nice and simple, but the insurance cover via Endsleigh is top notch. I found that I was paying both NRA and CA for pretty much the same stuff, but NRA covered me for the loss of my bolt last year, whereas CA just openly laughed.

Until anyone else can prove that they have us shooters at the forefront, I'm staying where I am for the insurance cover frankly

Sorry didnt spot your question until now.
I would recommend considering the NGO or SACS, just my experience, others are obviously happy with BASC.

I have never called on any insurance nor asked for specific advice but BASC have consistently fed me duff advice verbally on general firearms stuff, or none at all.

SACS were looking for a member disadvantaged by the Police Scotland position to be a test case.

The CA have steamed in on the Lincs LMC when they initially advised GPs incorrectly and distinctly ‘threatening’ letters were sent out to applicants - also threatened to go legal on the surgery concerned!

Their attitude towards this latest and very serious threat to shooting sports appears to be good - certainly better than BASC/NWRPOA which was ‘instrumental’ in setting up this disastrous situation.

BASC seem to be happy to dig their own grave - I hope one of my council members pulls his finger out and gets Council agreement to pursue this. Oh its not friday so they wont be going to the pub.

May I (as a member) also ask what is the function of BASC Direct Ltd - created in 2014, the Companies House Description suggests it may have something to do with the BASC mag/publications or acting as agent for insurance - I presume it is either a co-operative society or a Charity under the 2014 Act which changed BASC from an Industrial and Provident Society to a 'Registered Society' and yet it does not state which - I thought this wasn't permitted ?
Also formed under the Chairmanship of Alan Jarred?.
Seems to 'turn-over' about £500k per year. I must have missed that news of the set up.
