I'm waiting to get my hands on some once fired brass......~Muir
The M1 Garand was initially developed with a new round using a .276 inch bullet (but not the .270 Winchester ) alongside the .30-06.

I'm not. I remember being at the SHOT show in Las Vegas when Remington declared that the military was officially adopting the 6.8 SPC. We all know how that turned out.....~MuirS

One of the lads that came back from the SF Sniper comp in South Carolina earlier this year said the Creedmoor will be used next year. A hint that the mil will be using it. I am not a fan of 6.5 for hunting deer but as a target/ mil / long-range bullet it has worked in the past. The 6.5 creedmoor ticks a lot of boxes that are relevant to the military. I think it is here to stay as it is a proper short action cartridge, barrel life OK, ammo a bit lighter than 308 and better long range performance. I don't think the US military willy nilly takes on cartridges because of a fad. How many new small arms cartridges have they taken on in the last 50 years?
At least with the creedmoor existing rifles can be re-barrelled, existing mags work.
btw. as far as I heard the sniper comp was won with rifles using carbon wrapped barrels. The world does not stand still.

True. This is just Special Forces getting permission and some money to try the 6.5 Creedmoor. That is good. This is a continuation of a major policy change which began under President G.W. Bush in 2002, to allow the military to submit equipment which civilians were finding useful to a streamlined purchase and try. That gave us new camo patterns, new cartridges, sights, slings, stocks magazines, boots, body armor, and mess gear. Not all of them stick, but hopefully the cream rises to the top.Why are you not a fan of 6.5mm for deer hunting?
I did some reading around this “announcement” and concluded that any wholesale change to 6.5CM by Big Army is probably a long ways off. I suspect the premise is somewhat premature.

I can assure you Edi that no deer of any kind or size in NZ will just run away from a 143gr ELD-X at a MV of 2750-2800fps, if its anywhere within 600m+ its gonna be worried. Unless Irish deer are made of something quite different, like kevlar or basalt. It would be quite embarrassing if a guide turned their noses up at a 6.5 Creedmoor with the ELD-X. What would you say to the man?
